Morgan State University, sometimes known simply as MSU, is a public historically black research institution located in Baltimore, Maryland. Morgan State was established in 1868. It is the most prominent of the historically black colleges and institutions in the state of Maryland (HBCUs). The university, which at the time was known as the Centenary Biblical Institute, changed its name to Morgan College in 1867 in order to commemorate Reverend Lyttleton Morgan, who had served as the first chairman of the board of trustees of the university and had donated property to the institution. In 1975, it was granted university status.

The Thurgood Marshall College Fund includes Morgan State University among its affiliated institutions. Morgan State University is a public university, although it is not affiliated with the University System of Maryland in any way. It is categorised as an R2 university, which stands for "Doctoral Universities - High Research Activity."

MSU, sometimes known simply as Morgan State University, is a historically black institution located in Baltimore, Maryland. In 1867, it was established as a Methodist Episcopal seminary under the name Centenary Biblical Institute with the purpose of preparing young men for careers in the ministry. Thomas Kelso, who was a co-founder of the school and president of the board of directors for many years, left a bequest that endowed both the Male Free School and the Colored Institute before he passed away.
