The Mino Shiba Inu (Japanese: 美濃柴犬) is a rare Japanese Hound native to Gifu Prefecture. It was bred as a hunting and guard dog, but due to lifestyle changes after the war the breed went into decline.[1]

The Mino Shiba Inu is a type of Shiba Inu unique for its almost solid red colouring, it lacks the “urajiro” markings of the standard Shiba Inu, and the only accepted colours are shades of red.[2]

History

The Mino Shiba Inu originated in the mountainous regions of Gifu Prefecture, it has been used as a hunting and guard dog since ancient times. It was popular with hunters due to its size and red colouring,[2] and was bred by many people. But after the war lifestyle changes meant that the demand for hunting dogs decreased, coupled with a lot of cross breeding the Mino Shiba Inu went into decline.[1]

Preservation Activities

In 1936 the Mino Shiba Inu was designated as a natural monument.[2]

Due to the rarity of the breed it is currently protected by the Mino Shiba Inu Preservation Society, established on April 23, 2012, who are carrying out preservation efforts to restore the breed.[3]

The Society holds events and activities to bring attention to the breed. One such activity is the opening of Mino Shiba Inu no Sato (Japanese: 美濃柴犬の里), a village where you can meet and learn about Mino Shiba Inu.[4]

In 2019 another group named the ‘Mino Shiba Inu Research Group’ was started by students from the Department of Animal Science at Gifu Prefectural Ogaki Yoro High School.[5] The students recieved two puppies from the Mino Shiba Inu Preservation Society, to start a breeding program, and in 2021 the dogs each had 3 puppies.[6][7] As of 2023, there are a total of 300 Mino Shiba Inu in Japan.[8]

Characteristics

The Mino Shiba Inu is a small, spitz-type hound.[1] It has a curled tail, which can come in several styles, small, triangular ears, and dark, reddish-brown eyes. They have a short and shiny coat, which only comes in three shades of red: red, yellow-red, and scarlet-red,[2] they do not have the ‘urajiro’ markings seen on the shiba inu.[1]

The Mino Shiba Inu is loyal, sensitive, and alert.[2] It is a quiet dog with no aggression towards humans. It is smart and obedient,[1] but unique among the shiba inu breeds for being friendly and playful.[9]

Research by Gifu University has shown that, while related, all types of Shiba Inu are significantly different and should be treated as seperate breeds.[10]

Health

The Mino Shiba Inu is a relatively healthy dog, with a lifespan of 12-15 years, and is pretty hardy due to its origins as a working dog. Despite this, however, the fertility of the Mino Shiba Inu is weak and the litters are small, averaging 1-3 puppies per litter.[9]

Gifu Univerisity is investigating the genes of the Mino Shiba Inu in order to help with the preservation efforts and breeding.[9]
