Mika Karhumaa (born 28 September 1972) is a Finnish author, music business manager and lecturer. He is best known for his trilogy, The Essence of the Music Business, a methodical book series about the international music business. An independent sequel for the trilogy, The Art of Music Business Management – For Artists and Managers will be published in 2022.[1]

Karhumaa is an owner of Re-Member Agency, working on strategic music business management. His clients vary by multiple genres and current industrial needs. He is and has been an artist manager or a co-manager at the artists like Winterborn, Celesty, Delta Enigma, IRENE, Gentle Savage, Chronoform, Annika Nord, Jennifer Porter, Jack McConnell and Rylos.[2]

On a regular basis, Karhumaa acts as a lecturer and course planner at Seinäjoki University of Applied Sciences. He has also shared his expertise in the music business management as a lecturer at Sibelius Academy or Arcada University to name few.[3]

Early life and education

Karhumaa was born on 28 September 1972 to Seppo and Terttu. He grew up in Seinäjoki, Finland, where lived till 1992. As a teenager, Karhumaa learned to play bass guitar and was a member of multiple local bands. He also played and coached baseball for many years.

Karhumaa, in 1995, enrolled in the University of Turku, where he studied law. Karhumaa, even though having an inclination toward music, decided to pursue law after he got inspired by John Grisham's book - The Firm.

Career

Karhumaa started his career in 1994 as a bass guitar teacher at Turku Pop Rock Jazz school, where he worked for a year and then left upon his admission to the University of Turku. In 1997, Karhumaa became a legal trainee at Finn-Power, where he worked for over a year.

In 2000, Karhumaa established Re-Member Agency offering strategic music business management services, where he is also currently working. In the same year, he also established Re-Member Agency offering strategic music business management services, where he is also currently working.

In 2004, Karhumaa joined Seinäjoki University of Applied Sciences as a lecturer, where he served for a brief period. In the same year, he also became a legal advisor for helsinkirecords.com. In 2007 he again served as a lecturer at the Seinäjoki University for a brief period. In 2005, Karhumaa became a manager at Winterborn, where he worked for over three years. A year later, he also became a manager at Celesty, where he served for over two years.

In 2012 Karhumaa became a guest lecturer at Sibelius Academy and later in 2018 became a music business management lecturer and course planner at Arcada University where he served till May 2020.

In 2019 he joined Seinäjoki University by invitation - as a music business management lecturer and course planner. Since then he has been in charge of the management studies within its cultural manager program.

Karhumaa is also a prolific author, best known for his seminal trilogy "The Essence of the Music Business." The series includes volumes on contracts, philosophy, and strategy, and serves as a cornerstone for understanding the intricacies of music business management in a global context. Karhumaa published his first music business management book in 2000.

In 2022, he released his magnum opus, The Art of Music Business Management - For Artists & Managers, offering modern insights into music business practices. The second edition of the book was published in March 2024.

Personal life

Karhumaa is fluent in English, Swedish, and Finnish. He likes to travel and meet people from different cultures. His lecturing journeys may lead to anywhere in the world. Typical for Finns, he actively follows hockey - especially NHL and Toronto Maple Leafs as his favorite team.
