Mihajlo Sporić ( Belgrade, November 11 1997 - Cambridge, November 7, 2019 ) was a young Serbian Physicist and Mathematician, who took part in numerous contests and won the Gold medal at International Physics Olympics in 2016[1], International Žautikovska Olympics [2] (Kazahstan), and Romanian Physics Master in 2016.[3] He won the bronze medal at the International Astronomy and Astrophysics Olympics in India in 2016.[4]

Biography

Mihajlo Sporić was born on November 11th, 1997 to mother Stefani Pasko Sporić and father Zoran Sporić.

Mihajlo Sporić was a recipient of the St Sava award[5] given by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development to individuals and institutions with outstanding achievements and contributions in the field of education.

During his primary education, he competed in Biology, Chemistry, Geography, Serbian, English, Mathematics, and Physics for which he showed a keen interest.

Due to his outstanding achievements during 8th grade and success in the Serbian Mathematics and Physics Olympics, he was accepted into the Mentorship class of the Mathematics Gymnasium in Belgrade where he continued his involvement with natural sciences and mathematics, winning numerous prizes in domestic and international competitions.

In 2017 he attended seminars held at Petnica Research Station where he later lectured at the Physics seminary as a junior assistant lecturer.

He started studies at two faculties of the Belgrade University in 2016, the Faculty of Physics (Theoretical and Experimental Physics program) and the School of Electrical Engineering (Electrical Engineering and informatics), regularly getting top grades.[6]

In 2017 he began studying Natural sciences at Trinity College, Cambridge University, the United Kingdom standing out as a devoted scientist and researcher. His focus was on nuclear physics and elementary particles which led to his participation at CERN conferences. His experimental work was in the field of high-energy physics.

He attended the International Conference on Travel and Intercultural communication held in Halden Norway.[7]

Mihajlo Sporić was a recipient of the St Sava award[8] given by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development to individuals and institutions with outstanding achievements and contributions in the field of education.

In 2016 he won the Youth Hero award given to primary, high-school, and entry years university students in the area of science education. Given his achievements, Mihajlo was a role model not only to his peers but to the younger generations as well and was pronounced Youth Hero of Serbia.[9]

In his spare time he liked playing board games, running (He ran the half-marathon in 2015 and 2016 during Belgrade Marathon), playing the Piano (During his primary schooling he attended „Jovan Bandur“ Music school in Pančevo, completing the full curriculum in just three years), and writing poetry. He was the youngest participant of the poet-photography contest Belgrade Poetography 2015, where he won an award and his poem Desolation was in honorable mention category).

He was an active volunteer, among other his volunteering activity highlights include Mathematics Gymnasium Cup in 2014 and 2015, Center for Promotion of Sciences during May-Mathematics Month 2015. he eagerly shared his knowledge of Mathematics with everyone including primary school pupils in math’s workshops.

Mihajlo Sporić died on November 7th in Cambridge, United Kingdom and is buried in the Алеја заслужних грађана на Новом гробљу у Београду|Alley of Distinguished Citizens, New Cemetery Belgrade, Serbia.

In 2021 Majdanpek Primary school was renamed Primary School „Mihajlo Sporić“. [10] .

Mihajlo Sporić Award

The Almagi Foundation in 2021 established the Mihajlo Sporić award for the most successful student of the Mathematics High School in Belgrade in the current year.[11]

He won three gold medals in 2016. from the International Olympiad in Physics, the International Olympiad in Zautikov and the Romanian Master in Physics. In the same year, he also won a bronze medal at the International Olympiad in Astronomy and Astrophysics.
