Early life and education

Stein was born on 6 January 1967. His grandmother was a refugee who escaped the Russian concentration camps. Stein’s father resided in New York as a homeless person, who eventually became a millionaire, but lost his fortune again after spending his money on a lavish lifestyle.

Stein as a kid suffered from several immunity issues due to premature birth. He was even diagnosed with dyslexia. When he was eight years old, Stein enrolled at UCLA’s Fernald Child Study Center for behavior disorders. Within a year, Stein overcame his stutter and showed exemplary progress, and returned to a regular school. When Stein was 16 years old, he became a fitness trainer. This was a result of him being highly inspired by the film Rocky. During his senior year at High School, Stein became the founder and president of The Centaurs, a renowned social group.

Stein never completed his college education but took courses at community college in Psychology, Business, and Acting.

Soon after he graduated from high school, Stein started his entrepreneurial journey. He initially founded a Tool Company that wasn’t a success but gave him the necessary experience to succeed as a future entrepreneur.

When Stein was 19 years old, he began stand-up comedy and started performing at several local venues such as Comedy Store, Laugh Factory, and L.A. Cabaret. A year later, he got involved in the nightclub business and became the leading Los Angeles nightclub promoter for the Young Hollywood Scene at his club Off The Wall.

Stein began his acting career when he was 21 years old. He Played the original Dirk Diggler in Paul Thomas Anderson's The Dirk Diggler Story (1988), which turned into Boogie Nights 9 years later starring Mark Wahlberg as Diggler. Also, in Boogie Nights (1997), Michael has a memorable cameo as a reluctant customer Don Cheadle tries selling a "Hi Fi" stereo to.

A year later, Stein produced one of the largest movie promotion events ever at that point for the 1989 movie “Batman”, where he worked closely with Guber Peters Productions, Warner Bros., and Rob Friedman.

When Stein was 25 years old, he quit his nightclub promotion business to focus full time on acting and filmmaking. He began working as a production assistant on feature films, commercials, and music videos.

Stein’s live action short film “Rituals and Resolutions” became a highly acclaimed and won several festival awards, including the International Short Film Festival Oberhausen and The Palm Springs Int. Film Fest. The film was then acquired and distributed by HBO Films.

When Stein was 33 years old, he founded Abadak Inc., a company known for selling tarps. Within a year, his firm generated over half a million dollars. Three years later, Stein organized Tarp-Aid, a charity event where he donated thousands of tarps to the homeless.
