Matthias G.R. Faes (15 October 1991, Lier, Belgium) is a full professor and holds a PhD in engineering technology from KU Leuven. He is leading the Chair for Reliability Engineering at TU Dortmund University since February 2022.[1]

Career

Faes graduated his B.Sc. in Engineering Technology with option Manufacturing Engineering (which he finished magna cum laude) at the Lessius University of Applied Sciences in 2009, and obtained his M.Sc. in Engineering Technology with option Manufacturing Engineering (which finished summa cum laude) at the Thomas More University of Applied Sciences. After, her pursued a Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology at KU Leuven on the development of inverse methods for performing uncertainty quantification under very limited data. His PhD thesis was awarded the ECCOMAS award for the best PhD theses of 2017 on computational methods in applied sciences and engineering [2]. Further, based on his work in the field of imprecise probabilities, he was awarded the 2019 ISIPTA IJAR Young Researcher Award for demonstrated excellence in imprecise probabilities[3]. In 2020, he moved to the Leibniz University Hannover|Leibniz University of Hannover on a postdoctoral grant of the Alexander von Humboldt foundation, where he worked together with Prof. Michael Beer. As of February, he was appointed as full professor at the age of 30 and holds the Chair for Reliability Engineering at TU Dortmund University, which makes him one of the youngest full professors in Germany.

Faes is furthermore associate managing editor at the ASCE/ASME Journal for Risk and Uncertainty in Engineering systems (parts A[4] and B[5]), as well as editor at Mechanical Systems and Signal Processing.
