Matthew Beat (born November 6, 1981), known on YouTube as Mr. Beat, is an American social studies teacher and YouTuber, best known for his historical and educational videos. His most well-known series are Compared, Presidential Elections in American History, and Supreme Court Briefs.

Personal life

Beat was born in Topeka, Kansas, on November 6, 1981. He graduated from the University of Kansas in 2004 and the University of Nebraska Omaha in 2009 with respective degrees in journalism and education, and from Emporia State University in 2017 with a master's degree in history.

Beat currently resides in Kansas with his wife, Shannon, and daughters, Lydia and Reagan.

Career

Teaching

Beat began teaching social studies at Aubry Bend Middle School in Overland Park, Kansas, in 2011. During this time, he also coached basketball and tennis, before beginning teaching at Tonganoxie High School in Tonganoxie, Kansas, in 2015.

YouTube

Beat opened the YouTube channel "iammrbeat" on August 24, 2009, but did not upload his first video, "The Compromise of 1850 (according to the Traveling Salesman)," until January 10, 2011. His initial intent with the channel was to "supplement his lessons" in the classroom, noting that his students are "raised on YouTube." His videos eventually went viral, and he reached 100,000 subscribers in the summer of 2019. His most popular series include Compared, in which he compares the geography, history, culture, and other aspects of two locations (e.g. countries, states, cities), Presidential Elections in American History, a chronological recap of every United States presidential election, and Supreme Court Briefs, in which he explains prominent Supreme Court of the United States|U.S. Supreme Court cases. In addition to these series, he has written a song about every single former American president, performed by his band Electric Needle Room. He also published a book based on his Presidential Elections in American History series, titled Mr. Beat presents...The Ultimate American Presidential Election Book: Every Presidential Election in American History (1788-2020), in July 2020.[2][3]

Jobsolete

In addition to teaching and YouTube, Beat co-hosts Jobsolete, a history podcast, along with actress and comedian Helen Hong.[4]
