Mathematical modelling is a method of describing a system by using mathematical ideas and terminology. Mathematical modelling is the phrase used to describe the process of building a numerical model. Models based on mathematics are employed in the scientific sciences (such as physics, biology, earth science, and chemistry) and engineering disciplines (such as computer science and electrical engineering), but they are also utilised in non-physical systems such as the social sciences and humanities (such as economics, psychology, sociology, political science). Operations research is a broad discipline that includes the use of mathematical models to address issues in commercial or military operations. Musical models, linguistic models, and philosophical models are all examples of how mathematics is applied (for example, intensively in analytic philosophy).

To better understand a system and analyse the impacts of its components, models may be used to create predictions about its behaviour and to describe how the system works.
