Master Dy.[1] is a Power metal band, hailing from Porto, Portugal, was formed in 2019 and has since released two full-length albums, two EP, and multiple singles.
History
Master Dy is a Portuguese band that was formed in May 2019 by its founder, Dy Moob, a former member of Final Demand. Originally planning to create a Viking metal project, Dy Moob renamed the project Master Dy[2], after Dy Moob being stricken by a crisis of borderline disorder and having tried against her own life. Dy Moob quickly gained fanbase and by June 2019 already had hundreds of followers, even though until that moment she was the only member of the band.
In September 2019 after going to perform for some fans at Comic Con[3] Portugal, in September 2019. Bruno Cunha, the drummer of Underealm, later joined as the first person to give life to the character Hydra on drums. However, due to a busy schedule, Bruno left the band in 2019, and Draco became the lead guitarist and helped record the band's first album, which consisted of compositions by Dy Moob, with three tracks assisted by Esdras Lacerda, who later left to pursue a solo project.
Despite booking shows, the band's momentum was halted in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This break allowed Dy Moob to focus on composing and passing ideas to Draco, resulting in a fully written album. Throughout 2020, the band experienced several member changes, including the addition of Aquilla, Cepheus, Cethus, and Caio Gaona[4], a renowned Brazilian drummer, who was part of the project for three months. On February 26th, 2021, the band released their first album, "Unknown Sound"[5] on the DyMM P&M label[6]
In June 2021, the band surpassed 100,000 streams on Spotify and became the most heard female vocal band in the Portuguese metal scene on Spotify in 2021. They added a new Hydra to their lineup to become a full band again. In September they released the single "You Are Not Alone"[7][8] and in October 2021, the band released a surprise EP called "Halloween Mass," featuring four of their first songs from the CD re-recorded in a flat-recorded acoustic version.
Master Dy has been featured in some magazines such as Powerplay[9], Lusitânia, ORmagazine, and MTview Zinein which they were the cover of the edition. They were also one of only five bands from Portugal to consistently chart on Apple's Top 50, 100, and 200 in February, March, and April 2022.In March 2022, Dy Moob was invited to participate in a collaboration in support of Ukraine by the influential radio station "Caminhos Metálicos". The collaboration was reported in several influential media outlets in Portugal, such as SIC TV in the prime time of "Jornal da Noite"[10]
The band released their second album, "Legacy of Satan"[11] In December 2022, which consisted of nine songs composed solely by Dy Moob. Unlike the first album, which had collaborative lyrics by Esdras Lacerda, the second album did not receive the same critical acclaim. Dy Moob mentioned on social media that he recorded the songs in his small room in the Netherlands under strong pressure due to his immigration status and illness.
Despite their intriguing history, the band's sound cannot be easily classified by critics and DSPs, generating confusion about their genre. The band's vocal standards do not necessarily fit into power metal, and their instrumentals incorporate elements of power, death, and black metal. As a result, a subcategory called "Satanic Power Metal" is being used to define the band's unique style.
