Mario Farrugia Borg is a Maltese diplomat and former politician who was born on July 11, 1970, in Birkirkara, Malta. Mario is the High Commissioner of Malta to Australia and New Zealand.

Personal Life:

In several interviews, Mario shared his profound love of animals, religion and strong family roots. And when asked about his favourite football club he revealed it was the team of his hometown Qormi FC. Mario has often shared his left-winged beliefs stating[1]

Education and Early Career:

Mario Farrugia Borg received his primary education at St. George Primary School and continued his secondary education at Liceo Vassalli Junior Lyceum[2]. He then went on to attend Liceo Ganfrangisk Abela Msida to study 6th form, and he later began working at Mid-Med Bank which later on became HSBC Bank in Malta, where he spent over 20 years.

Political Career:

In 2013, following the election of the Labour Party in Malta, Mario was called up by Dr. Joseph Muscat to be a member of the Prime Minister’s Private Secretariat. In the secretariat Mario he was assigned the responsibility of the prime minister’s relations with minorities and foreign communities living in Malta and Customer Care. In 2014, he contested the European Union election in Malta on a Labour party ticket.

Diplomatic Career:

In 2019, Mario was appointed as the Consul General of Malta to Victoria in Australia.[3] As Consul-General Mario was renowned for his close work with several Maltese communities in Victoria. He served in this role from January 2019 to January 2021. In January 2021, Mario was appointed High Commissioner of Malta to Australia and New Zealand. On February 17, 2021, he presented his credentials to the Governor-General of Australia General David John Hurley, AC, DSC, FTSE, marking the beginning of his official duties as the High Commissioner of Malta to Australia.[4] On September, 7, 2021, Farrugia Borg presented his credentials to the Governor General of New Zealand, Dame Patricia Lee Reddy GNZM, CVO, QSO, DStJ.
