Marino Zerial
Marino Zerial (born 8 August 1958 in Trieste, Italy) is an Italian cell biologist.
Career
Marino Zerial graduated from the University of Trieste (Italy) in 1982 with a degree in biology. His thesis focused on Lysosomal storage disease. Following his graduation, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Institut Jacques Monod in Paris, France and the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Heidelberg, Germany.
In 1989, he became a group leader at the EMBL, and in 1998 he became a co-founder and Max Planck Director of the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics (MPI-CBG) in Dresden, Germany. Additionally, he holds an honorary professorship at the Medical Faculty of Technische Universität Dresden.
In 2023 he was appointed Director of the Human Technopole Foundation, the new Italian institute for life sciences in Milan, Italy.[1] [2]
Research
Marino Zerial's research has been instrumental in advancing the understanding of the molecular mechanisms of endocytosis. His work on Rab GTPase, which are master regulators of organelle biogenesis and membrane fusion, has established key principles that are widely accepted as foundational knowledge.[3] [4] He has also worked on various translational projects, including studying the role of endocytosis in bacterial infection, developing image-based high content screenings, investigating macromolecule therapeutics, and researching human liver diseases [5] [6] [7].
