Marie Lou Papazian is the Founder and CEO of TUMO Centre for Creative Technologies, a worldwide network of over ten centers specialized in providing free technology and design education with a pioneering pedagogical methodology to teenagers aged 12–18.

In 2019, Papazian received the Ordre des Palmes académique, a national order awarded by the French Republic on distinguished academics and figures in the world of culture and education.[1]

Early Life

Marie Lou Papazian was born in Egypt and raised in Lebanon. Her maternal grandparents fled Izmir during the Armenian genocide and eventually found refuge in Alexandria. Papazian’s paternal grandparents hailed from Urfa and Instanbul.[2] Papazian attended the renowned Hamazkayin Nshan Palandjian Djemaran (Lyceum) in Beirut, which in her own words, played a vital role in shaping her character.[3] Her formative years were also heavily influenced by the outbreak of war in Lebanon in 1982.[2] In one of her interviews, she reminisced about her persistence in making strides for good education which remained steadfast even in the face of the war.[3]

Career

Between 1982 and 1987, Papazian studied Architectural Engineering at the University Saint Joseph ESIB.[4] In 1991, she earned a Master’s degree in Construction Management from the Stevens Institute of Technology.[4] Papazian managed the construction of many renowned high-rise buildings in Manhattan, including the Marriott Hotel near the World Trade Center.[4]

In the late 1990s, Papazian moved to Barcelona where, together with her husband, she launched the educational platform “Three Grenades”, linking Armenian students to their diasporic peers through online educational programs that became the precursor of TUMO.[3]

Upon returning to the USA, she enrolled in the M.A. program in Computing in Education at Columbia University earning her second Master’s degree in 2004.[4]

In 2005, Papazian moved to Armenia with her husband and five children who enrolled in various grades of the local education system mostly inherited from the Soviet Union, which as they soon discovered, lacked crucial pedagogical foundations.[5] In an expected turn of events, a successful technology entrepreneur Sam Simonian contacted Papazian a year later to design a new technology education intuitive[6].

Aware of the deficiencies of the local educational system, Papazian and her husband combined their educational and engineering backgrounds and, in a matter of days, put together a plan for a gamified educational program with personal targets that adapted to learners’ needs and preferences. Sam Simonian and his wife Silva Simonian provided the financial backing for the nascent educational project, which became the foundation of what is now TUMO Centre for Creative Technologies.

Personal Life

Marie Lou Papazian is married to her childhood friend Pegor Papazian who currently serves as the Chief Development Officer of TUMO. They have five children.[5]
