Marian Preda (born 9 May 1963) is a Romanian sociologist, university professor and author. His research activity started in 1991 at the Research Institute for Quality of Life and has continued uninterrupted since 1995 in the University of Bucharest. He had leadership roles within the Faculty of Sociology and Social Work, first as a vice dean between 2000 and 2008 and then as a dean between February 2008 and December 2015[5]. He then continued his activity in the management of the University of Bucharest as a member of the Senate from 2004 to 2019. The role in the Senate was then followed up by his presidency of University of Bucharest Senate from December 2015 to 2019. Preda is now the Rector of the University of Bucharest, being elected to serve his mandate from 2019 until 2023.

Education

Marian Preda started his academic studies in 1984 at Politehnica University of Bucharest, Faculty of Mechanics, graduated in 1989 with a degree in mechanical engineering. In 1994 he graduated with a bachelor's degree in sociology from University of Bucharest, Faculty of Sociology, Psychology, Pedagogy. He continued his academic path and in 1996 he graduated with a master's degree in Social Policies provided by Faculty of Sociology and Social Work and a six month master's degree from England University in Cambridge, United Kingdom.

In 1996 he started his doctorate studies at University of Bucharest with a three-month documentation period at the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom. In July 2001 he was officially a doctor in Sociology.

Between 2004 and 2006 he graduated with distinction, being in the first 10% of graduates, from Tiffin University - Ohio, USA with a diploma of Master of Business Administration (MBA).

Professional experience [17]

Marian Preda started his professional life with a researcher title at the Quality of Life Research Institute in 1991. While being an academic teacher, he has continued his activity as an expert, external evaluator and consultant for multiple institutions: UNFPA, UNDP, UNICEF and World Bank [1995 – 2016]. In 2002 he started to work as an international consultant for UNICEF Republic of Moldova and UNFPA Republic of Moldova where he offered consultancy regarding children social protection. He also elaborated the National Report regarding the Development Objectives of the Millennium.

In 2004 he worked as an expert in multiple contracts for fixed periods of time financed by the PHARE program (Bernanr Brunhes International (BBI), FAS International Consulting Limited, The Department for International Development United Kingdom|UK (which now is closed and replace by Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office United Kingdom|UK)[18], CASPIS, Ministry of Labour, Ministry of Education, European Institute of Romania. His activities during this time were centred around research and training [2004 – 2014]. In 2007 he was a member of the National Population Commission of the Government of Romania, where he participated in the making of the Green Card of Romanian Population and reports concerning demographic policies.

In between January 2009 and June 2010 he served as Chairman of the Presidential Commission for Social and Demographic Risks Analysis. During his time at the Presidential Commission he was responsible for team coordination and development of reports for substantiation of social and demographic policies of Romania. During this time he was also doing managerial and coordination work in three projects financed by the POS-DRU program.

In 2010 he was named vice-president of the Romanian Society of Sociologists, followed by presidency of the same institution during 2012 – 2016. During his time within RSS, he oversaw the organization of multiple national and international conferences.

In 2016, Marian Preda was the President of National Statistical Council NSC and National Institute of Statistics NIS. His role was to prepare and to chair the NSC meetings and to validate the annual reports of NIS.

Between 28th April 2017 and 1st August 2017, Preda was a member of a Fulbright Program|Fulbright Postgraduate Research Scholarship Program in United States Department of State|United States Department of State, George Washington University|State George Washington University, Washington, D.C.|Washington DC, United States.
