Marc Aaron Levitt (born June 6, 1967, in New York, New York) is an American pediatric colorectal surgeon who specializes in the surgical treatment of complex colorectal and pelvic conditions in children.[1] He is currently the Chief of Colorectal and Pelvic Reconstruction at Children's National Hospital in Washington D.C. and Professor of Surgery and Pediatrics at the George Washington School of Medicine.[2] He works to improve colorectal care around the world by mentoring others,[3] leading mission trips to train surgeons in complex colorectal surgical techniques and donating copies of his textbooks to low-income countries.[4] Dr. Levitt is known for treating diagnoses like anorectal malformations (imperforate anus), cloacal malformations, Hirschsprung disease, and causes of fecal incontinence[5] that include spinal conditions and functional constipation.[6] Dr. Levitt's approach focuses on multi-disciplinary collaboration,[7] which has been shown to result in better patient care and outcomes.[8]
Education and Training
Dr. Levitt earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania and his medical degree from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.[9] He later completed his general surgery residency at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York and did fellowships at Schneider Children's Hospital and Children's Hospital of Buffalo.[10]
Colorectal Programs
Dr. Levitt has created several collaborative colorectal programs at pediatric hospitals.[11] He first created colorectal departments at Cincinnati Children's Hospital[12][13] and Nationwide Children's Hospital.[14] In 2019, he moved to Children's National Hospital in Washington, DC to start the first colorectal program there[2]. Dr. Levitt co-founded the Pediatric Colorectal and Pelvic Learning Consortium (PCPLC),[15] an organization that collaborates with colorectal centers worldwide. In addition, he is the founder of the Colorectal Team Overseas (CTO), an organization that sends colorectal-trained providers to developing countries to offer care and education for patients[16]
Publications and Activities
Dr. Levitt has written 5 textbooks[17][18] on colorectal conditions and authored many related scientific publications.[19] Dr. Levitt has recorded a series of educational materials and live surgery presentations about colorectal conditions[20] and a series of webinars and podcasts on GlobalCastMD.[21] He also gave a TEDx Talk about the importance of collaborative, multi-disciplinary care for the treatment of colorectal issues.[22]
