Mama Sonic is an Indie pop band from Stockholm. They have been credited with the creation of "Plonk"..[1], a musical sub-genre combining elements of British Indie rock and punk rock. Their sound has evolved throughout the years into the self-described genre of "Hoa-Hoa"[2] - a blend of proto-punk and pop of the sixties and seventies. The band's own description of the genre claims somewhat ambiguously that: plonk means that you shouldn't think so much about what you play and make sure to pull in a lot of gravel in the hall[3].

Their concerts are frequently introduced with readings from the bands in-house poet, as well as guest-appearances from other collaborators.

Origin

Formed in early 2015, Mama Sonic consist of singer/basist Jacob Hallerström, drummer Olof Niklasson, guitarist brothers Richard and Martin Wedberg and poet Jonathan Brott.[4]

The original four previously rallied behind frontman Jacob Hallerström's self-titled project, active between September 2013 until the end of 2014 releasing one EP, Inner City Postcard[5]. The group at that time played a sound more akin to indie folk-rock, but then reformed, taking on a new musical directions as the five-part band Mama Sonic.

The band's name was supposedly coined standing in line to the former Stockholm nightclub, Baba Sonic[6], the final night before it closed down. Being an epicenter for young people in Stockholm, they chose the name Mama Sonic to attract the attention of said group.[7]

In October 2019 Mama Sonic released their self-titled debut album. The new sound displayed on the album hints at a more diversified range of influences, being described by one reviewer as "destilling down all their pop, proto-punk and indie influences into something comparably personal"[8].

Mama Sonic were signed by indie label ADSRecords in spring 2015[9], but currently release their music under the independent label "Hoa-Hoa"[10]
