Mahatma Rice is a brand of rice owned by Riviana Foods Inc, a subsidiary of Ebro Foods. It is headquartered in Houston, TX and is distributed across the United States.[1] Ebro Foods acquired Riviana Foods and its brands (including Mahatma Rice) in 2004.[2]

History

In 1932, during the Great Depression, Mahatma Rice was introduced by the Louisiana State Milling Company. Its original product was long grain rice.[3] In 1965, the Louisiana State Milling Company merged with River Brand Rice Mills, Inc. to form Riviana Foods Inc.[4] Today, Mahatma Rice is still owned by Riviana Foods, which was acquired by Ebro Foods in 2004, and offers many varieties of rice, including white rice, parboiled rice and brown rice.[5] [6]

Mahatma Rice is a national rice brand, serving all of the domestic United States, while its sister brand Carolina Rice covers northeast distribution from Maine to Washington, D.C.[7]

Philanthropy

In June 2020, Mahatma Rice donated 22,000 bags of rice to Houston-based firefighters as part of its "Mahatma Rice Unites" campaign.[8][9]
