Maha Mamo (born February 29, 1988) is a former Statelessness, Brazil motivational speaker and human rights Activism, born in Lebanon to Syrians parents, who couldn't get any citizenship due to her parent's Religion, by restrictions stated in Syria and Lebanon nationality laws.[1][2] [3]

Biography

Born in Lebanon, in 1988, to Syrian citizens. The fact that her father was christian and her mother was muslim made them impossible to register their marriage legally, also Maha's birth, preventing her to gain citizenship. She was also not considered Lebanese as the Lebanon nationality law does not automatically grant citizenship to people born there.[4][5]

Without documents, she lived a childhood full of struggles, to study, to get medical care, to even walk in the streets, having to avoid police control points, because she had no identity documents to prove her nationality or identity.[6] [7] [8]

In 2018, by a change of laws, Brazil recognized stateless people, making naturalization possible.[9]

On 4 October 2018, Maha received the document annoucing her citizenship from Brazil’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Maria Nazareth Farani Azevêdo [10][3]

Maha is an activist for the UNHCR campaign #IBelong, in favor of the stateless people [11]
