Sathya Kumar Manoharan (born 2 July 1987), also known as Sathya Kumar, is an Indian entrepreneur, educationalist and renowned Economic & Tax Law Advisor in India. He is the Chief Mentor of Tycoon Academy, coaching Chartered Accountancy, Cost Accountancy and Company Secretary courses and working on empowering young leaders through 21st Century Skills as inspired by the World Economic Forum (WEF). He is also the Founder of Swami Vivekananda School of Public Policy (inspired by the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy), Vivekananda Institute of Leadership & Governance (VILG) and the Indian Institute of Politics (IIP) - a non-partisan institution inspired by the Harvard Institute of Politics (IOP). Sathya is National Youth Icon Award winner and Change Maker Awardee of Vashistha Dhruva of Sudesi Indic Thought Magazine.[1]

Sathya Kumar is an ardent devotee of the Holy Trio (Ramakrishna|Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, Sarada Devi|Holy Mother Sarada Devi, and Swami Vivekananda) of the Sri Ramakrishna Math, Chennai|Sri Ramakrishna Mission. He has been initiated by the Most Revered His Holiness Swami Gautamananda Ji Maharaj, Global Vice President of Ramakrishna Math and Mission. Sathya Kumar is personally blessed by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama and regularly meets His Holiness to revive the Nalanda|Nalanda Tradition and the philosophy of Gautama Buddha|Buddha.[2]

Early Life and Education

Sathya Kumar was born on 2 July 1987 to a Hindu family belonging to politically-affluent Reddiar Community in Chengalpattu, near Kanchipuram (spiritual center), Tamil Nadu, as the eldest son of Manoharan Krishnamurthy and Jalaja Manoharan. He has a younger brother, Surya Manoharan, who is a triple-qualified finance professional, practising as a Chartered Accountant. His grandfather, Thiru. G. Sundarama Reddiar, was a prominent leader in the South India Farmers’ Union and the trusted lieutenant of veteran farmers’ activist, Thiru. C. Narayanasamy Naidu.

Being from a family of farmers in a small town near Maduranthakam, he struggled to get admission in an English-medium school in Chennai. His father realised it was not financially feasible to raise a child in the city so he moved them to a suburb near Tambaram. Sathya Kumar attended Sitadevi Garodia Hindu Vidyalaya in Tambaram, Chennai.[3]

During his schooling, at the age of 13, Sathya Kumar was part of the National Cadet Corps (India)|National Cadet Corps (NCC) and was selected from Tamil Nadu to represent in the Sardar Vallabhai Patel National Integration Camp (NIC) held at Kohima, Nagaland for 30 days, in which he emerged as the Best Cadet in India.

Upon completing his higher secondary education, he directly pursued Chartered Accountancy, Cost Accountancy and Company Secretary professional qualifications, becoming one of the few triple-qualified finance professionals in India. He also graduated from the University of Madras with a B.Com degree. Inspired by Bharat Ratna Babasaheb Dr. B. R. Ambedkar|B.R. Ambedkar, and having developed a passion for Law with a vision to provide public service, he proceeded to complete his LLB, and became a Law Graduate. He acquired international qualifications such as Chartered Institute of Management Accountants|Chartered Institute Management Accountant (UK) and Chartered Global Management Accountant (USA), powered by American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), world’s leading accounting organisation. He is currently pursuing PhD in Global Transfer pricing|Transfer Pricing in the areas of Economics and Management.

During his Chartered Accountancy student days, Sathya Kumar was an active member of student initiatives of Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI). He participated and presented on various technical topics such as International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), Indian Accounting Standards (IASs), Special economic zone|Special Economic Zones, Sarbanes–Oxley Act|Sarbanes-Oxley Act, and Company’s Act, in more than 22 regional, national and international conferences of ICAI. He was conferred the Best Speaker Award at the International Conference of CA Students, organised by the Northern India Regional Council (NIRC) of ICAI, in 2010, at Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC), New Delhi.

During 2008-2009, Sathya Kumar published articles on ‘Chartered Accountancy and Entrepreneurship’ and ‘Sarbanes-Oxley Act’ in the magazine of Chartered Accountants Students’ Society, Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka (CA Sri Lanka).

From 2009-2013, Sathya Kumar was the Editor of Smart Trainee, E-Magazine of Prime Academy.[4]

Profession

Sathya Kumar started his career as a finance professional in one of the Big Four Accounting Firms, KPMG, with a wide exposure in Domestic Tax, International Tax, Assurance and Advisory, for almost a decade.[5]

In 2013, Sathya Kumar became a co-opted member of the Taxation Law Committee of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI), Southern India Regional Council (SIRC).

In 2014, he became the youngest co-opted member of the Corporate Laws & Corporate Governance Committee (Central Council) of ICAI, New Delhi.

In 2015, Sathya Kumar was appointed as the Honorary Advisor to the Department of Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare, Government of Tamil Nadu. He was invited by the Indian Embassy, ICAI Muscat and ICAI Doha, to deliver a speech to NRIs on the topic ‘India - The Next Economic Powerhouse’, by Ambassador of India to Oman, H.E. Mr. J.S. Mukul.[6][7][8][9]

In 2016, he became the Organising Committee Member of ICT Academy, which is an initiative of the Government of India in collaboration with the State Governments and Industry, and the first of its kind venture under the Public-Private-Partnership model.[10] He was invited by the Indian Business Forum (IBF) and ICAI Uganda at Kampala, presided by Ambassador of India to Uganda, H.E. Dr. Ramesh Chandra.[11]

In 2017, he founded Tycoon+ Advisors, which specialises in GST, Corporate Law and Management consultancy services.[12] He is also a practising Chartered Accountant based in Chennai. In 2018, he became the Audit Advisory Board Member of Comptroller & Auditor General (C&AG), PD-CERA, Government of India.

In 2018, Sathya Kumar was specially invited to train over 600 GST officials of Tamil Nadu by the Department of Commercial Taxes, Government of Tamil Nadu. He was appointed as the Key Committee Member of Sri Ramakrishna Math’s 125th Year Anniversary Celebrations for Swami Vivekananda’s Chicago Address at the World Parliament of Religions. He was instrumental in bringing the Honorable Prime Minister Shri. Narendra Modi as the Chief Guest to address the youths on 11th September 2018.[13]

In 2019, Sathya Kumar was invited by China Radio International, to speak about Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) and India’s soft power strategy, where the Honorable Prime Minister Shri. Narendra Modi presided.

In 2020, Sathya Kumar was appointed as the Academic Advisor of Sri Ramakrishna Tapovanam - Sri Sarada Niketan College for Women, Karur, affiliated to Bharathidasan University. He was also appointed as the Policy Advisor of Civilization Institute, an initiative of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (International Society for Krishna Consciousness|ISKCON).

Sathya Kumar has lectured extensively on management, finance, law, tax, economics, socio-political and development related topics at IIT Madras, IIM Kozhikode[14], IIM Ranchi[15], IIM Bangalore[16], National Academy of Customs, Indirect Taxes & Narcotics (NACEN) GoI, Comptroller & Auditor General of India (C&AG), Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), GST Revenue Division, Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI)[17], Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM), Madras Management Association (MMA)[18], Coimbatore Management Association, Ahmedabad Management Association (AMA), Malaysian Institute Of Accountants (MIA), Singapore Institute of Management (SIM), ACCA across the country. He has also traveled to Africa, GCC countries, Taiwan, Australia, Singapore, Japan, Sri Lanka, Uganda, Tibet, and Malaysia[19] for delivering lectures.

Public Policy and Public Service

Since childhood, Sathya Kumar’s social and political thoughts were shaped by late Thiru. Narayana Rao, who was blessed by Iron Man of India Shri. Sardar Vallabhai Patel in 1947. After leaving behind his lucrative career as a public accountant in one of the Big Four Accounting Firms, his focus turned to full-time public service and philanthropy. In 2017, Sathya Kumar initiated a campaign, in which some socially responsible college students looking for volunteering opportunities could mentor underprivileged kids who were in dire need of help.[20] Under this initiative called  ‘Transforming India - Mentor Map for Children In Need’, these college students volunteered to train the children on skills like yoga, art, sports, carpentry after their working hours.

In 2018, Sathya Kumar founded Swami Vivekananda School of Public Policy, which was inspired by the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, Singapore. The Institution is mentored by over 50 Governance Leaders across Asia, focused on Intellectual Revolution for Transforming India, patronised under Vivekananda Institute of Leadership & Governance (VILG), an Indian Youth Think Tank to Nationalist Youth Student Bodies, Policy Makers, Industry and Academia. Under VILG, grassroots-level social leaders are identified and awarded with VivekaVeer Awards at the Vivekananda House, Sri Ramakrishna Math, Chennai, for bringing social upliftment and social transformation within their localities.

Sathya Kumar regularly represents issues relating to Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), socio-economic development and law to NITI Aayog, MyGov.in, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Law & Justice, Ministry of Education, Ministry of MSMEs, Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Ministry of Culture, Prime Minister’s Office, Government of India. He is regularly invited as the spokesperson for Government of India Schemes in Doordarshan and All India Radio (India's Public Service Broadcaster) of Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, Government of India.[21]

In 2016, Sathya Kumar was invited as a Guest Speaker at the National Ilan University, Taiwan, to speak on ‘Leadership DNA & Startup India Policy’ of Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India.[22][23] At Taiwan, he was specially invited by the former Ambassador of Taiwan to India, Mr. Philip Wen-Chyi Ong, to have a discussion about strategies of MSME Indo-Taiwan collaboration. Governor of Puducherry In 2019, Sathya Kumar was invited by the Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry, Her Excellency Dr. Kiran Bedi to speak on ‘Design Thinking’ for governance leaders in the Youth Engagement Program at the Raj Nivas, Puducherry.[24] He was also invited to address on ‘Design Thinking & Leadership - In Swami Vivekananda Way’ at Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India, Ahmedabad, a combined initiative of the Government of Gujarat, IDBI Bank Ltd., IFCI Ltd., ICICI Bank Ltd. and the State Bank of India (SBI).[25] He trains IIT Madras students on 'Design Thinking - Swami Vivekananda Way' for 8 hours every year as certification program offered jointly with IIT Madras Vivekananda Study Circle & VILG.[26]

Sathya Kumar has represented as public policy, finance and economics expert in various renowned TV channels such as Puthiya Thalaimurai, Thanthi TV[27], News7 Tamil[28], Captain TV, Sun News[29], News18 Tamil Nadu[30], Kalaignar TV[31], Raj News, Jaya Plus, Aadhan TV, Cauvery News, Win News, NewsGlitz, Behindwoods TV, NDTV, News Asia, Times Now and NewsX, and in radio broadcasting channels such as RadioCity, Radio Mirchi, Radio One, Simplicity, Suryan FM, Chennai Life Radio, Hello FM Radio, and Rainbow FM.

Tibetan Movement

His Holiness 14th Dalai Lama bestowed the obligation of transforming the Tibet|Tibetan people’s livelihood, on Sathya Kumar. He has interviewed His Holiness 14th Dalai Lama at His residence at various instances, focussing on spirituality and eternal values of India.[32]

Sathya Kumar traveled widely across Tibetan settlements situated in Bylakuppe (Karnataka), Dharamshala (Himachal Pradesh), Ludhiana (Punjab), and Kathmandu (Nepal), for field studies. He then met with the Sikyong, Lobsang Sangay, President of Tibetan Government-in-Exile, officially known as the Central Tibetan Administration|Central Tibetan Administration (CTA), and discussed ideas on setting up a non-banking financial company that will play an active role in financing the livelihood and related projects for Tibetans in exile. On 17 January 2018, the Finance Department of CTA launched Gangjong Development Finance Pvt Ltd, which will fulfil the need for a financial corporation in the Tibetan community.[33]

Sathya Kumar is regularly invited by the Department of Finance (CTA), Tibetan Government-In-Exile, to address in the Tibetan Entrepreneurship Development (TED) meetings.[34][35] He was appointed as the Honorary Lifetime Member of the Tibetan Chamber of Commerce by the President of Tibetan Government-in-Exile, Lobsang Sangay and Kiren Rijiju|Kiren Rejiju, the current Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports.[36]
