Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) is a type of private network / leased lines, the technique designed to shape and speed up traffic flows between enterprise and service provider networks. MPLS was created in 1990 to provide efficiency and effectiveness to traditional IP routing. When the first router which receives an IP packet, determines and assign a forwarding equivalence class (FEC). Each router in the network has a table indicating how to handle the packet.

MPLS is good for real time applications which cannot tolerate latency. The data and voice apps can be used on the same MPLS.
