Lee Giuk, born January 24, 2000), known mononymously as Giuk and formerly known by the stage name CyA, is a South Korean musician, rapper, songwriter, and producer. He is the bassist and rapper of the South Korean alternative rock band Onewe (formerly known as M.A.S 0094 or MAS). He made his solo debut on April 20, 2023, releasing his first EP Psycho Xybernetics: Turn Over with the lead single "Time Machine (2100)".[1]

Name

From 2015-2023, Giuk promoted under the stage name CyA, chosen after Cyane of Greek Mythology and meaning "dark blue" in ancient Greek. On March 9, 2023, RBW announced that he would no longer be going by the stage name CyA and would use his legal name, Giuk, for all official activities henceforth. In a letter shared on Onewe's official daum fancafe following the announcement, Giuk further explained that after many years growing up as CyA and long consideration, he had chosen to go by the name his parents had given him, after learning the beautiful meaning of his birth name as written in Hanja.[2]

Personal Life and Education

Giuk was born on January 24, 2000, in Yeongtong-gu, Suwon, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea. He came from a family of four, which includes his mother, father, older sister and himself. He attended Modern K Music Academy from his last year of elementary school, through which he met members of and formed the band now known as Onewe.[3] He graduated high school in the class of 2019 from Hanlim School of Performing Arts department of Applied Music, where was known to be the top student in the bass major. The members of Onewe attended both his middle and high school graduations.

Named Late and SoundCloud

During high school at Hanlim, Giuk formed the music crew Named Late with friends from his class: Sunwoo of The Boyz, Woobin of Luminous, and singer-songwriter and producer RARE (also known as Jihoon and formerly known as W!nter). According to the members, the origin of the name "Named Late" was that the members shared a tendency to be late when they met up. As of 2022, the group also consists of a fifth member, Gray Dot, who also attended Hanlim but is two years younger than the other four members.[4] Giuk actively releases mixtapes and collaborations, including works with Named Late, on his personal SoundCloud giuk2 and has also designed his own album art for some releases, as credited on SoundCloud. Giuk was previously known by the SoundCloud pseudonym, LateCyA, which was derived from a combination of Named Late and his former stage name CyA. Giuk has adapted a number of songs originally released on his personal SoundCloud for official releases including: Onewe's "Q" (feat. Hwasa) and "A.I." and Giuk's solo releases "Unblown (2020)" (feat. Aden), "Ego (2021)" (feat. NiiHwa) and "Xybernetic (2077)" (feat. KAMI) from his solo debut mini album Psycho Xybernetics: Turn Over.

Giuk participated in the making of Named Late member RARE's first EP Rareness, recording the bass for the song "Rockstar". Named Late released their first official collaboration in the form of Giuk's "Love Virus♥ (2050)" (feat. Sunwoo) on Psycho Xybernetics : Turn Over, written and composed by Giuk and Sunwoo, with an independent special music video production by Named Late, co-directed by Giuk and Sunwoo.[5]

Career

2012-2014: Early band formation Type B

In his last year of elementary school and first year attending Modern K Music Academy, Giuk was introduced to and formed a band with the two other youngest students of the academy, Ju Harin and Kang Hyungu, better known by the stage name Kanghyun, who together became the foundation of the later-formed band currently known as Onewe.[3]

In 2013, Giuk and Kanghyun performed in a session band for the K-pop boy group Beast (now known as Highlight) for their performance of "Fiction" at the 2013 DMZ Peace Concert.[6]

On June 17, 2014, Giuk, Kanghyun and Harin's band, then known as Type B, were announced as contestants for the first K-pop Contest held in Suwon, Gyeonggi-do.[7] The band won the grand-prize for the competition on October 11, 2014.[8]

Giuk recruited his neighbour Son Dongmyeong, also a current member of Onewe, as a vocalist and pianist for the band, and on April 27, 2015, Type B was announced as the house band for the 2015 Suwon K-pop Contest.[9]

2015-2016: M.A.S 0094 Formation and Debut

On May 2, 2015, Type B, consisting of Onewe members Giuk, Kanghyun, Harin and Dongmyeong, attended the first round of the 2015 Suwon Kpop Contest as the house-band and guest performers.[10] Following this round, the band approached and recruited the winner, Jin Yonghoon, the final member and current leader and main vocalist of Onewe.[3] Now a five-member band, consisting of all the current members of Onewe, the band named themselves M.A.S. 0094. The name M.A.S 0094 stands for "Make A Sound" plus Giuk's (and Dongmyeong's) year of birth, 2000, as the youngest member and Yonghoon's year of birth, 1994, as the oldest member.[11]

On August 13, 2015, M.A.S 0094 released their first digital single with M.A.S 0094, "Butterfly, Find a Flower", in which Giuk participated as primary lyricist, receiving his first KOMCA credit at the age of 15. "Butterfly, Find a Flower" was dedicated to comfort women with all proceeds donated to charity to support these women.[12][13]

Following the release of their first EP Feeling Good Day on March 25, 2016, Giuk made his official debut with M.A.S 0094 on August 2, 2016, with a B-side from the EP "After 15 Seconds", through their first music show performance on The Show.[14][15]

On December 12, 2016, Giuk featured in the OST "Promise" by Donghyun of Boyfriend (also known as BF), for The Miracle OST Part.2.[16]

Giuk, along with fellow band members Kanghyun, Harin and Dongmyeong, performed as a the band for Mamamoo's "Decalcomanie" performance at the 2016 KBS Song Festival.[17]

2017-2018: MAS, survival show and rebrand Onewe

On January 6, 2017, M.A.S 0094 released their second EP Make Some Noise with the lead single of the same name.[18]

On April 1, 2017, Giuk with M.A.S 0094 signed an exclusive artist contract with RBW entertainment, shortening their name to MAS.[19] During October of that year, Giuk participated in the survival show The Unit, auditioning alongside MAS and competing individually. He was eliminated in the 7th episode, placing 59th.[20]

Giuk, along with members Kanghyun, Harin and Dongmyeong, featured in the music video for Solar's "It's been a long time", released on April 25, 2018.[21]

In June 2018, RBW announced that MAS would rebrand and re-debut under the name "Onewe".[22]

On December 31, Giuk, Kanghyun, Harin and Dongmyeong performed as the session band for Hwasa's medley stage of Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" and "We Will Rock You" at the 2018 MBC Song Festival.[23]

2019-2022: Re-debut as Onewe and solo activities

Giuk produced and featured in "Crazy & Crazy (Prod. CyA)" for labelmate Oneus' debut album, titled using his former stage name CyA, which was released on January 9, 2019.[24] The song was initially intended to be released by Giuk alone, but was requested by the agency for Oneus' album and Giuk thus produced the song for the group within a three-day deadline. Giuk later worked on rewriting and rearranging the song to create Onewe's "Crazy Good", released the following year in the band's first physical album as Onewe ONE.[25]

Giuk officially made his re-debut with Onewe on May 13, 2019 with the release their first single album titled 1/4.[26][27] Giuk took lead on writing and composing the song "Ring on My Ears" for the album, for which a music video was released on May 15, 2019. The demo version of the song was also included in the album under the title "Ring on My Ears (remix)".

On June 7, 2019, he made his debut in Japan as a member of Onewe with their first Japanese single album Reminisce About All.

Giuk has been credited for much of the song-writing of Onewe's discography throughout their career, as detailed under § Music production credits.

In 2020, Giuk composed, contributed to the lyrics and participated in the arrangement of "Dizzy" for Oneus' fourth mini album Lived.[28]

Giuk, along with members Kanghyun and Harin, made the rearrangement for Solar's "Solar vs Solar: Mamamoo B-sides Medley Challenge", released on Solarsido Youtube channel on the November 30, 2020, and appeared in the behind the scenes of the production at the end of the video.[29]

Giuk produced The Boyz' Sunwoo's "광합성", also known Photosynthesis, as the first song released on The Boyz SoundCloud on December 1, 2020.[30]

In 2021, Giuk co-wrote the title track "Zombie" for Purple Kiss' second EP Hide & Seek and featured in the music video.[31][32] He also acted in a main role alongside Purple Kiss member Goeun in the group's story films for their following comeback.[33]

2023-present: Solo debut

Following the release of Onewe's first full English album Gravity on January 28, 2023, prepared in advance prior to members Yonghoon and Kanghyun enlisting in their mandatory military service, the remaining active members were to focus on solo/unit activities while waiting for the complete band to be reunited in the beginning of 2024.[34]

On March 9, 2023, Giuk announced that he will no longer be using the stage name CyA, and with go be his legal name, Giuk, for all official activities henceforth.

On April 8 and 9, Giuk held his first solo concert "Prologue: Turn Over" in anticipation of his solo debut.[35]

Giuk officially made his solo debut on April 20, 2023, releasing his first EP Psycho Xybernetics: Turn Over with the lead single "Time Machine".[1] Giuk contributed heavily to the production of the album and is credited as the main writer and composer of all eight tracks. The album also contained features including NiiHWA, and friends Sunwoo (member of The Boyz and co-member of § Named Late), Aden and KAMI, who also participated in writing and composing.[36]

On May 1, 2023, a special music video for Giuk's "Love Virus♥ (2050)" (Feat. Sunwoo) from his EP Psycho Xybernetics: Turn Over was released. The music video was co-directed by Giuk and Sunwoo, and filmed with the help of their friends as an independent Named Late project without their agencies.[5]
