Laura Maliszewski is a scientist and research administrator in the Harvard Program in Therapeutic Science (HiTS) and the Laboratory of Systems Pharmacology at Harvard Medical School.[1].

Early life

Born in Chesterfield, Virginia, Maliszewski was in the third graduating class at the Maggie L. Walker Governor's School for Government and International Studies in Richmond, Virginia. She graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science with Honors in Biotechnology from the University of Delaware where she was a student researcher in the lab of Allan D. Shapiro[2] (now a science fiction author) and was twice awarded Howard Hughes Medical Scholar[3]. She completed her Doctorate in Virology from the Harvard Division of Medical Sciences[4] in the lab of Judy Lieberman[5] studying the role of small RNA signaling in HIV infection[6] of primary Macrophage.

Career

Maliszewski was Officer for the Science and Innovation Network of the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office from 2009-2012 where she supported international collaborations on regenerative medicine and advanced biomanufacturing[7]. In 2012 Maliszewski joined the Harvard Medical School Department of Systems Biology to start the Laboratory of Systems Pharmacology (LSP) with lab director Peter Karl Sorger. The laboratory is an inter-institutional, interdisciplinary research facility focused on using quantitative measurement and computational analysis to improve therapeutics for human diseases.[8] The LSP was built in 2013 by a grant from the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center[9][10], and expanded in 2017 by a second capital grant.

Within the Harvard Program in Therapeutic Science, she enables the founding and serves as a co-Director of the Harvard-MIT Center for Regulatory Science[11]

In 2021, Maliszewski became the Scientific Director of the Blavatnik Life Lab Longwood, a commercial incubator at Harvard Medical School that hosts therapeutics start up companies[12][13][14]. The Life Lab Longwood has a sister facility at Harvard Business School, the Pagliucia Life Lab.[15]

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Maliszewski and her husband, Jeff Wetherhold, founded Ohia Advisors LLC, a consulting group that supports small businesses adapt and thrive during the pandemic.[16]
