Laura Dinu (Eiven-Dinu Elena-Laura; b. February 9, 1994, Hunedoara, Hunedoara county, Romania) is a singer, songwriter and actress from Romania, who is currently working and living in Brasov. From the album În Limba Mea Laura Dinu became well-known in Romania after she competed at the Romania's Got Talent show in 2021 with the song "Unii și alții"[1]. She later settled in Brasov where she started working on her first album which would contain 17 analogue songs. After two years of work, on July 31, on the day of her one-year wedding anniversary, Laura released her first studio album as a female singer: În Limba Mea (2023).[2]

Life and career

1994–2020: Childhood and Music

Laura was born on February 9 in Hunedoara and is the second child of the Dinu family. Her father died on February 8, 2008, one day before Laura's 14th birthday, and her mother died on January 1, 2014, when Laura was in her first year of university and only 19 at the time.[3] The artist stated that she started to sing before she could even speak and that music has always been a part of her life. Laura showed talent for songwriting and music composition from an early age: "I was composing songs in kindergarten, which I would sing alone in class, to the surprise of my school teacher. And when I learned to read and write I began to memorize poems and full texts by heart just because I liked the sound of the words."[4] She completed her first year of High School in 2010 in Hunedoara, at Iancu de Hunedoara National Collage, and then moved to Craiova with her mother and sister where she attended Frații Buzești National College until 2013. She continued her studies in England, where she graduated from Middlesex University's Theatre Department in 2016 with a specialization in Solo Performing.[5] În Limba Mea album cover Laura's first attempt to make a name for herself in music began in 2012 when the young performer was in Milan, where she was working as a model during the summer. Later on, in university, she took the modules that allowed her to take the major artistic decisions related to her shows, hence preparing herself for the development of her own brand[6]. In the autumn of 2019 she moved back home to Romania and in the beginning of 2020 she retired to an Orthodox Monastery in Sibiu county where she stayed for about half a year.[7] Asked why she dropped out everything, Laura replied that she wanted to find out if the monastic life was indeed her calling, as none of the things she had done or seen had ever truly fulfilled her.[8] She repeatedly expressed that she also wanted to discover the true intentions and motivations behind her desire to pursuer a music career.[9]

At the end of 2020 Laura left the monastery. Shortly after returning to town she applied for the Voice of Romania. A few days later she got a call from the organizers of the show who suggested her to audition for Romania's Got Talent in[10] Brasov, as The Voice would not be held that year due to the restrictions imposed by Covid-19.[11] The same day Laura called Robert Watzatka (Watzzy), whom she didn't know personally, and asked him to help her get three songs ready for the audition. At the audition, after messing up the first two songs, they sang "Unii și alții".[12] The judges were pleasantly surprised by the last song and invited Laura to Bucharest for the jury audition. The song reached millions of people and Laura became a public figure, recognized for her music.[13]

2021 The success of „Unii și alții” and the album «În limba mea»

From the album În Limba Mea The success of "Unii și alții" confirmed to Laura that music was indeed her path. But when she set out to start the recording of her first album she discovered that she couldn't afford it on her own. She reached out to her listeners via social media platforms and her fans sent her donations from all over the world. The artist then contacted Republic Production Studio and started the pre-production of her album in 2021. The album was produced by Zoltan Kiss, Csaba Cszaz and Norbert Kovacs and Laura settled for only one look for the whole project; both the photos and videos portray the artist in the same dress, with her hair down and in her bare feet. Among the musicians who played on the album she mentioned the Cazanoi Brothers, Vaughn Roberts, Flow Strings Quartet, the violinist Roland Jakob Attila, the bassist Szabolcs Gyergyai (Szabi), the drummer Ovidiu Cristian (Chico), the rapper Nimeni Altu' and the vocalists Teodora Bota (Tess) and Krisztina Koszorus (Koszika)[14]. Laura Dinu said the following about her first album:[15]

“În limba mea” is more than an album, it's a diary. I wrote these songs without thinking that anyone will ever listen to them. I wrote them at different times in my life and they cover about ten years of my inner world. Listening to this music diary you will meet Lala, the teenager from Hunedoara who lost both of her parents a few years apart from each-other. Lala, the young lady from England who continued to wait for her first lover even after nine years since the break-up. And Laura, the mature woman who is now looking back with understanding and gratitude for the road. Among personal lyrics on the album, you will also find poems written by Mihai Eminescu, Octavian Goga and Licuța Pantia".

2021–Present: Independent Artist

Laura Dinu released her first album on Distrokid on July 31st, 2023 as an independent artist[16] and since then she has continued to release a video weekly on Youtube. Today she is working on her upcoming project, which according to her will be in English.[17]
