In the town of Lake Forest, Illinois, is the private liberal arts institution known as Lake Forest College. The college was originally established in 1857 as Lind University by a group of Presbyterian preachers; it did not become coeducational until 1876, and it did not become a mostly undergraduate liberal arts university until 1903. About 1,500 students from 43 different states and 80 other countries make up Lake Forest University's student body. In addition to 32 undergraduate major and minor programmes in the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences, Lake Forest also features programmes of study in pre-law, pre-medicine, communication, business, finance, and computer science. Lake Forest is a private liberal arts and sciences university. The majority of students choose to make their home on the forested 107-acre campus of the institution, which is situated a half mile from the coast of Lake Michigan.

The Associated Colleges of the Midwest are among those with which Lake Forest is associated. The institution is a member of the NCAA Division III Midwest Conference, and its 23 varsity sports teams participate there.
