In the region of Chhattisgarh, you'll find the city and industrial area known as Korba. Before the 25th of May in 1998, Korba was a part of Bilaspur District. After that date, Korba was separated into its own district for the sake of easier administration, although it is still a part of the Bilaspur Division. Because of its extensive coal reserves and thriving industrial base, Korba is known as the power capital of Chhattisgarh. This distinction is due to the presence of multiple thermal power plants owned by public and private entities, including NTPC Limited and CSEB from the state of Chhattisgarh, as well as private power plants owned by private companies. In the Gevra region of the Korba Coalfield, there is an open cast coal mine that is the biggest in India and the second largest in all of Asia. Every year, the Korba mine produces 140 million tonnes of coal, which is equivalent to 17% of the overall coal output in the country and 85% of the production of Chhattisgarh Coal. Korba is the location of the smelter that belongs to the privately held company BALCO, which produces aluminium. In this area, the Pahadi Korwa, a protected tribal group, make up the majority of the population. The Korba area is surrounded on all sides by verdant and beautiful woods, and it is also home to a significant number of indigenous people. Due to the fact that the local tribal people choose to live in the forest region in harmony with the natural environment, they have been able to preserve their particular cultural traits and ancient ways of life.

The coordinates of Korba are 22.35 North and 82.68 East. It is at a height of 252 metres on average (827 ft). According to the census completed in India in 2011, the population of Korba city was 365,253. The city of Korba is located inside the larger Korba District, which was established on May 25th, 1998. Jamanipali is the neighbourhood where the NTPC Korba Super Thermal Power Plant can be found. The Gevra and Kusmunda mines provide it with coal, while the Hasdeo River provides it with water. The river also serves as the power plant's source of cooling water. The National Thermal Power Corporation is the owner as well as the operator of the Korba Thermal Power Station. In close proximity to the city are a number of other minor power plants, such as the Hasdeo Thermal Power Station, the Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Thermal Power Plant, and the Lanco Amarkantak Power Plant.

The Bharat Aluminium Company owns and operates a facility that is one of the most important aluminium producing enterprises in Asia. In 2009, a chimney that was being constructed at the Balco smelter by Gannon Dunkerley & Company collapsed, resulting in the deaths of 49 employees. The management of GDCL has been accused of carelessness in connection with the tragedy.
