Khan Rhyad Odita (born 28 May 2007) is a filmmaker, Social activist, author, and founder of Liverpool based community organisation; Mulgrave Street Action Group Community interest company[1]. Khan won the student inspiration award at the Liverpool City Region Culture and creativity awards 2021 for his community activism in Toxteth, Liverpool (England)[2][3][4]. He also currently holds several titles in the prominent global service organisation, Lions Clubs International, as Lions Young Ambassador for the British Isles (2022-Present) and Lions Young Ambassador for Merseyside (2021-Present).

Early years and education

Khan was born in Toxteth, Liverpool and has lived there for the past 14 years. His family has lived in city for generations, including his mother who has previously held jobs as an entrepreneur and teacher respectively.

He attended Dovedale Primary School and continues to attend secondary school in the Mossley Hill suburb of Liverpool.

Community work

During the summer of 2021, Khan founded Mulgrave Street Action Group to combat fly tipping in his local area in Toxteth. The organisation was formally incorporated as Community interest company[1] on 23 August 2021.

Throughout the summer of 2021, Khan organised several community clean up days to pick litter off of streets, clear green spaces of fly tipping, as well as offering skips for local residents to easily dispose of any large rubbish. Through Mulgrave Street Action Group CIC, Khan is campaigning for a Community gardening to be built on a disused piece of land on Mulgrave Street, Liverpool. He and Mulgrave Street Action Group are currently in negotiations with Liverpool City Council about the details of tenure.

Work as an Author

Khan wrote and published his first book 'My Friend Who Didn't Speak' in November of 2021, aimed at younger children, the key themes are encouraging equality, inclusion, and diversity, as well as anti-bullying. He has devoted his books to the CIC he founded, with the majority of profits returning to his community through funding for initiatives. In 2022, Khan will be delivering 'Literacy' to Primary school around Liverpool, and schools internationally, with the aims being to advocate the themes of 'My Friend Who Didn't Speak'. Khan's next book 'I Don't Like The Night' will be released at the end of March 2022.

Video work

Starting in summer of 2021, on behalf of Mulgrave Street Action Group CIC, Khan began producing short videos to advertise small businesses. He has supported local charities; such as Liverpool Heartbeat Children’s Charity[5], grassroots organisations and CICs' and is continuing to film for small businesses in the Toxteth area of Liverpool. He also uses his skills as a videographer to document the work of Mulgrave Street Action Group CIC; their events and projects. Video work for Liverpool Heartbeat is available on their website.

Both Khan and his CIC's work have been written about, interviewed, and filmed by a number of notable Liverpool and England wide news organisations, such as: ITV Granada's 'Granada Reports'[6][7], BBC North West, 'BBC North West Tonight'[8][9], 'BBC Radio Merseyside'[10], Liverpool Echo[11] 'The Guide Liverpool'[12], 'Scally Mag'[13], and National World's 'Liverpool World'[14].

Working with other charities and organisations

Khan has worked in partnership with a variety of Service club, Charitable organization and Small business since becoming an activist, most notably his association with Lions Clubs International as the Lions Young Ambassador of the British Isles (2022-Present). In this role he helps deliver projects in partnership with his local lions club; City of Liverpool Lions. He is also the Young Ambassador of Liverpool Heartbeat Children’s charity, with which he has helped deliver projects around Liverpool which aid youth[5]. Khan also has ties to Sustrans aiding in delivering their cycling projects around Liverpool[15]. Khan has worked in partnership with Rotary International by filming their fundraiser for prostate cancer.[16]
