Er. Kenneth Gin Ying Doon (born December 1924) was elected as the first President of the Institution of Engineers, Singapore.[1] He practised as a Civil Engineer from 1946 to 2000.
Personal life and education
Er. Kenneth Gin was born in Australia in December 1924 as the third youngest of twelve siblings. He had 5 brothers and 6 sisters. His father was Hoey Sing Goon, a small Chinese businessman who migrated to Melbourne, Australia before marrying Woo Choy Yeuck. Gin attended Melbourne High School in South Yarra, Melbourne from 1939 to 1941.[2] He then graduated with Honours in Civil Engineering from the University of Melbourne in 1945.[3] Kenneth Gin married Dr. Wee Kit Lee in 1956.[2]
Engineering career
In 1946, he joined Messrs, Scott & Furphy, Consulting Engineers in Water Supply, Sewerage and Municipal Works, Melbourne.[2] He moved to Singapore to work for Hume Industries (Far East Organization) Ltd. as Project Engineer between 1956 to 1959. He was appointed Deputy Director of Public Works, Singapore in 1959.[4] Following that he was appointed Acting Director of Public Works in 1963.[4] Finally, in 1966, he was appointed General Manager of Singapore's Public Utilities Board (former Public Works).[4][5] In 1970, he became the Group General Manager of Singapore Land & Investment Corporation[6] that was in charge of the development of the island of Sentosa into a tourist attraction. A new company was incorporated in 1973 to oversee the development of Sentosa, Sentosa Development Corporation. Gin was named General Manager of Santos Development Corporation in 1973.[4] By 1976, Gin had created his own Engineering Consultancy practice[3] working with Mobil|Mobil Oil Singapore Pte Ltd oil refinery projects and as an Arbitrator on engineering disputes.[6]
