Kelley Sheehan is an American composer and improviser. She is the winner of the 2019 Gaudeamus Award for pioneers in contemporary music and the laureate of the international impuls Composition Competition for 2025.[1][2] She serves as an assistant professor at Northwestern University.[3]
Career
Sheehan received her PhD in music composition at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. At Harvard, she studied with composer Chaya Czernowin.
As of 2025, she is assistant professor of Music Composition and Technology at the Northwestern University Bienen School of Music.[3]
Sheehan's compositions are featured at international festivals and institutions including Bludenzer Tage zeitgemäßer Musik, Time:Spans, Wittener Tage für neue Kammermusik, Darmstadt International Summer Courses for New Music, Klang!, impuls, and the Frequency Festival. Ensembles performing her works include ensemble mosaik, nadar ensemble, Line Upon Line, Collective Lovemusic, Klangforum Wien, Riot Ensemble, International Contemporary Ensemble, Yarn/Wire, Alarm Will Sound, and Ensemble Musikfabrik.
As an improviser on modular synthesizers and visuals, she has performed at festivals such as the impuls international contemporary festival.[4]
Her work Talk Circus is often credited with introducing the no-input mixer within contemporary classical music.[5]
