Karl-Heinz Hoffmann (born in Nuremberg, October 27th, 1937) is a German right-wing extremist and self-labeled fascist. Hoffmann became known as the founder of the notorious right-wing militia Wehrsportgruppe Hoffmann, which was implicated in the 1980s Oktoberfest Bombing[1] and the murder of rabbi Shlomo Lewin and his wife in december of the same year.[2]

Life

Hoffmann grew up in East Germany, in 1953 he fled to the Federal Republic and settled in Nuremberg, Bavaria. In 1973 he founded the militia Wehrsportgruppe Hoffmann WSG (Military Sports Group Hoffmann), which he led in an authoritarian fashion modeled after the position of Ernst Röhm in the nazi stormtroopers SA.[3] This organization was banned in the Federal Republic in January 1980 by the german federal minister of the interior, Gerhard Baum. On September 26, 1980, Gundolf Köhler, who had participated in exercises of the Wehrsportgruppe, committed a bombing at Munich's Oktoberfest, killing 13 people.[4] [5]In December 1980, rabbi Shlomo Lewin and his wife were shot dead in Erlangen by Uwe Behrendt, another member of Hoffmanns organization. However, Hoffmann's direct involvement has never been proven. Hoffman and his militia collaborated with the PLO during the Lebanese Civil War. Hoffmann served jailtime for several offences in the 1980s, including forgery of money, unlawful imprisonment and physical injury.[6] While in jail, Hoffmann applied for parole, claiming to have changed his views. After being released early in 1989, Hoffmann immediatly publicly declared that he was infact still a fascist and rejected democracy.[7] He relocated to the East German town of Kahla after reunification, where he opened a restaurant and started several renovation projects with his wife.[8] He remained in contact with right-wing extremists, such as former members of his organisation, who had by then joined the neo-nazi party National Democratic Party of Germany.[9] His restaurant was frequented among others by Ralf Wohlleben, who would later play a major role in the history of the terrorist organisation National Socialist Underground, which murdered immigrants in the 2000s.[10] In 2004, he purchased a knightly estate once owned by the antisemitic poet Börries von Münchhausen in the saxon town of Frohburg, and created a foundation which was supposed to raise funds for the historic building´s reconstruction. Saxony´s CDU-led state-government funded the reconstruction project with over 130.000€ between 2005 and 2007. In 2017 it was revealed through a parlamentary investigation that Hoffmann had infact not used the funds to renovate the Münchhausen-Castle, which at the time was in even worse shape than in 2004. The building was then confiscated and auctioned by the government.[11] In 2011, Hoffmann´s properties where raided by the police after his name was mentioned in a foiled terror plot targeting a left wing member of the state-parliament of Thuringia.[12] [13] He lead several unsucessful lawsuits against journalists and officials in order to clear his name,[14] [15] and to this day spreads various conspiracy theories concerning right-wing terrorism. He has blamed the german secret services and the israeli Mossad for the Okoberfest-Bombing, the NSU-killings and other violent crimes.[16]
