Kamiar Mohaddes is a macroeconomist at the University of Cambridge.[1][2] He is a specialist of the economic impact of climate change and more generally energy economics and his work in the area has been covered in major news outlets including the BBC[3], the Financial Times[4], and the New York Times[5] among others.[6][7] He is an Associate Professor at the Judge Business School, and a Fellow of King's College, Cambridge[8] where he co-founded the King's Entrepreneurship Lab, a venture incubator. [9]
He consults for a variety of external organizations including the Asian Development Bank, the Bank of Canada, and is regularly a Visiting Scholar at the International Monetary Fund.[10]
Career
Mohaddes obtained his PhD from the University of Cambridge and St John's College in 2011 where he was a Gates Scholar, under the direction of British-Iranian economist Hashem Pesaran.[11]
Academic work
Mohaddes is known for his work on the macroeconomic impact of climate change. His work has shown that the impact of climate change could cost the world 3% of growth, with the United States being also more impacted than previously thought.[12][13] His research showed that an increase in average global temperature by 0.04 degrees Celsius per year will reduce world real GDP per capita by around seven per cent by 2100[14] and virtually all countries will be affected.[15] In another of Mohaddes' studies, credit ratings were predicted to fall sharply as a consequence of the climate crisis.[16][17] As a consequence, Mohaddes strongly advocated for rapid policy change in an interview for the Washington Post.[18]
In addition to his work on climate change and energy economics, Mohaddes has worked on the macroeconomics of Arab countries[19] with a particular focus on Iran[20], and on fiscal policies during the COVID pandemic.[21]
