Joshua Hoffine (born April 25, 1973) is an American photographer who photographs tableaux scenes of horror that often deal with themes of childhood fears and frequently feature children in their portrayal. Hoffine is credited with inspiring a new subgenre of photography which he coined "Horror photography.”[1]

Life and career

Hoffine was born in Emporia, Kansas. He attended Shawnee Mission West High School in Kansas City, graduating in 1991. He attended Kansas State University, graduating in 1995 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English literature.

Shortly after, Hoffine began capturing his first photographs which led to employment at Vedros Photography in 1999, and Hallmark Cards as a photographer from 2000 through 2002.[2] Hoffine began creating his first horror photographs in 2003.[3]

Style

Hoffine’s photographic style has been described as capturing the essence of a disturbing fable.[4] His photographs are elaborately staged and lit using techniques, sets, lights, costumes, props, and SPFX make-up and/or prosthetic makeup typical of a motion picture production.

Hoffine produced his first photographic series entitled After Dark, My Sweet from 2003 through 2009. After Dark, My Sweet is renowned for its use of children as the potential victims within the scenes of horror.[5] Viewers’ reaction to the series garnered many interviews with the photographer. Hoffine has ascribed Gregory Crewdson and William Mortensen as early influencers on his style as well as the horror films Poltergeist and Evil Dead 2.[6]

Hoffine has utilized friends and family members as models in many of his images. His daughters, then at young ages, appear in many of his photographs most of which are part of the After Dark, My Sweet series.[5] Hoffine has also featured actors in two of his images. A. Michael Baldwin appears in Hoffine’s photograph Last Stand.[7] Doug Jones (actor) appears in Hoffine’s photograph Innsmouth.[8] Hoffine has collaborated with J. Anthony Kosar, a sculptor, make-up artist, and prosthetic artist known for his appearance on the reality series Face Off (season 4). Kosar has provided make-up, prosthetics, or a combination of both to several of Hoffine’s photographic images. Notable collaborations have been Hoffine’s zombie photograph Last Stand, his H. P. Lovecraft photograph Innsmouth, and his Robert Louis Stevenson tryptic Jekyll & Hyde.
