Joshua A. Hirsch (born 1969) is an American physician who is internationally renowned as an interventional pain physician[1][2][3] and radiologist[4] specializing in interventional pain management.[5] He is recognized as an expert in percutaneous vertebroplasty,[6] percutaneous sacroplasty,[7] and is considered to be one of the fathers of minimally invasive spine surgery.[8] Hirsch performs balloon-assisted kyphoplasty[9] and has been credited as performing the first combined percutaneous vertebroplasty/kyphoplasty in Boston.[10][11] Hirsch has served as Chief of Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery,[12] Director of Interventional Neuroradiology,[13] Chief of the Interventional Spine Service,[14] Vice Chair of Interventional Radiology Quality & Safety and Associate Departmental Quality Chair[15] at Massachusetts General Hospital.[16] At the age of 21, he was the youngest person in modern history to graduate from Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.[17][18] In addition to practicing, Hirsch is an Associate Professor at Harvard Medical School[19][20] and is a founding editor of the Journal of NeuroInterventional Surgery, where he serves on the editorial board.[21][22] Hirsch has published nearly 400 papers and many chapters in the peer-reviewed literature.[23] In 2013, he and other members of The American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians (ASIPP) published epidural guidelines for interventional techniques in 2013, which has continuously been updated.[24][25] Hirsch participated once again with ASIPP to publish Guidelines for Responsible Opioid Prescribing in Chronic Non-Cancer Pain.[26]
