Joni Mikael Siik (born March 27, 1997) is a Finnish artist and performer. Most notably, Joni is known for his work as a singer, songwriter, and guitarist of his own creative tour de force band, Shiva. Joni has also acted in Tuusteatteri, which is located in his hometown of Tuusula.[1]
Joni was born in Hyvinkää, but he and his parents lived in the Tuusula area at the time.
CHILDHOOD AND YOUTH
When Joni was a child, his parents broke up, and he was diagnosed with epilepsy at the young age of 4. As a young boy, Joni didn’t enjoy sports or school much, and he was bullied because of his health problems and his habit of drifting away into his own made-up worlds. Joni listened to a lot of music from a very early age. Initially, he liked techno and female artists like Shakira, but when he was 10 years old, he discovered rock music. Upon hearing rock music, Joni knew he wanted to learn to play the guitar. Joni’s family wasn’t very wealthy, so they couldn’t afford a guitar and an amplifier. For three years, Joni played music via a gaming console with the sensational game Guitar Hero.
By the time Joni had finished his confirmation camp and was confirmed, he acquired his first electric guitar. Before this, he had studied for a year at the music academy with a loaned acoustic guitar just to convince his mom that he was committed to playing the guitar long-term.
In his teens, Joni listened to a wide variety of rock music, mainly grunge and alternative rock. When he first got his electric guitar, he started studying his favorite artists and albums from front to back, playing guitar for 6 to 8 hours a day, sometimes even skipping school to do so. When Joni had attained the skill level he wanted, he started writing his own songs at the age of 16 or 17.
CAREER
Joni started his professional career as a performing musician in 2019 when he was 22. As a shy person, he struggled with massive stage fright and had a hard time finding musicians who shared his vision. By early 2020, Joni had found a suitable lineup and named the band Shiva. Joni was fascinated by the mythology of the Hindu goddess Shiva and decided to name the band after her. In March 2020, Shiva released its first EP, Fetus. The same year, the world was shocked by the COVID-19 pandemic, making gigs hard to find. In its first year, Shiva did some streaming gigs and a few live performances. The next couple of years saw Shiva actively gigging. In 2022, Shiva was back in the studio making an even longer and bolder EP. Three singles and one music video were released from the Non Censuram EP, which came out in December 2022. The years 2022 and 2023 were filled with gigs, culminating in a third-place finish in the Emergenza finals by crowd votes.
As a musician, Joni is driven by creating sonically unique sounds and touching lyrics that connect with people. Growing up, Joni had a hard time connecting with people and finding his place in society. Some of his favorite artists gave him consolation and a feeling of belonging, which is something Joni tries to replicate in Shiva’s music.
Joni's musical influences include bands and artists like Nirvana, Alice in Chains, The Smashing Pumpkins, Genesis/Phil Collins, The Cranberries, The Cure, Nine Inch Nails, Faith No More, Silverchair, Stone Temple Pilots, Foo Fighters, Pantera, Megadeth, The Prodigy, and Pink Floyd, among many others.
PERSONAL LIFE
Many of Joni's friends and associates have probably heard him say, “privacy is a currency.” This is something Joni believes in greatly, and thus he values his privacy. Joni cherishes his time in peace and quiet and loves nature. Besides music, which is Joni’s number one passion, he also enjoys acting, photography, writing, reading and self-improvement. Joni exercises regularly and tries to eat healthily. He believes in spirituality and making meaningful conversations and connections.
