Pathogenesis: How infectious diseases shaped human history (Penguin 2023)

Jonathan Kennedy is a writer and academic who works at Queen Mary University of London.[1]

His research explores the link between politics and health. One study published in the European Journal of Public Health demonstrates that EU countries with the highest levels of support for Populism political parties also have the highest levels of vaccine hesitancy.[2][3][4][5] [6][7] Another study published in Lancet Global Health explores the 2016–2022 Yemen cholera outbreak, showing that the infection rate and case fatality rate were significantly higher in areas controlled by Houthi movement rebels due to the Saudi-led coalition's strategy of blockading and bombing civilian infrastructure in these areas.[8][9][10] His research on farmers' suicides in India demonstrates that farmers who grow cash crops, have small landholdings, and high levels of indebtedness are most likley to their own lives.[11][12][13]

He is the author of Pathogenesis: How infectious diseases shaped human history (Penguin 2023).[14] He has written for The Guardian,[15][16] London Review of Books,[17] Al Jazeera English,[18] Project Syndicate,[19] El País.[20][21]
