John Hewko is a lawyer and public policy scholar who is the current General Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of Rotary International and The Rotary Foundation. He has written for and appeared in publications including the Chicago Tribune.[1], CNN[2], and The Wall Street Journal[3].

Career

Hewko previously worked for the Chicago-based law firm Baker McKenzie, serving as an international partner with the firm's newly-established Moscow office, and as managing partner in Kyiv and Prague. In 1991, he worked as part of the working group which completed an initial draft of the Ukrainian constitution.[4]

Between 2004 and 2009, Hewko worked for the Millennium Challenge Corporation, negotiating foreign assistance agreements for 26 countries, and has also previously for the Carnegie Endowment's Carnegie Endowment's Democracy and Rule of Law Program.[5] He holds degrees from Harvard University, Oxford University, and Hamilton College, New York[4]

Personal life

Hewko is the son of Ukrainian immigrants, who moved to the United States in 1949 after four years in German displaced persons camps.[6] He lives with his partner, Marga, in Evanston, Illinois.[4]
