John Dassieu is an Australian-French artist, author, and environmental activist.[1] He is recognized for his work dealing with modern symbolism and has been nicknamed The Symbolizer.[2][3]

Career

Dassieu symbolizes the subject of his painting in one singular stroke, always using a black brush on a white background. Be it, for instance, a man, a word, an emotion, an animal or a phrase. Each painting measures 90 cm x 117 cm and is signed on the back of the canvas.[4]

Dassieu’s symbols embody in one singular stroke the shape and soul of the subject in its most accurate form so as to render it on the inert canvas in its simplest and most profound expression.[4]

Dassieu paints the subject’s intrinsic form and what emanates from it, rather than its exterior form. He seeks to symbolize the pure essence of the painted subject, aiming to depict the perfect reflection of the painted subject’s soul and form.[2]

In August 2012, Dassieu released a video installation titled Visual on YouTube.[5] The artwork garnered some popularity.

In April 2017, Dassieu released a mystery thriller novel in French titled La terre guide la main. The story takes place in France in April 1993 and is inspired by true-life events surrounding the suicide of a prominent French politician.[6]

Occasionally, Dassieu contributes articles to online and print publications such as CounterPunch,[7] South China Morning Post,[8] and Mediapart.[9]

Environmental activism

Dassieu engaged publicly in environmental activism with the birth of his daughter in March 2019. He released a music video on YouTube titled Try The Greens to call for a Green vote.[10] The music video was created to give his daughter a chance to see what we still see of Earth.[11][12]

In an interview to promote the music video, Dassieu stated "It's only by getting more Green representatives elected to all levels of government that our children have a chance to see what we still see of Earth. It's time to call for a Green vote."[13][14]

Following the release of Try The Greens, Dassieu participated in campaigning for a Green vote in the European Parliament elections of 2019, as well as in elections held in Australia, UK, USA and Canada in 2019 and 2020.[15][16][17][18][19]
