There are many different types of environmental movements, including conservation and green politics, but the environmental movement (also known as the ecology movement) is a philosophical, social, and political movement dedicated to tackling environmental challenges. Changes in governmental policy and individual behaviour are advocated by environmentalists to ensure fair and sustainable resource management and care of the environment. The movement is based on ecology, health, and human rights because it recognises mankind as a participant in (rather than an adversary of) ecosystems, rather than as an antagonist.

The environmental movement is a worldwide movement that is represented by a diverse spectrum of groups, ranging from large corporations to grass-roots organisations, and that differs from one country to another. Because of its enormous membership, diverse and strong ideas, and oftentimes speculative character, the environmental movement does not always achieve its objectives in unison with other organisations. Several other movements, such as the climate movement, are included inside the umbrella term. At its most general level, the movement comprises private people, professionals, religious followers, politicians, scientists, non-profit organisations, and individuals who are passionate about the issue.
