Johan Swinnen is a Belgian Economist and the Director General of the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) and the Global Director of the Systems Transformation Science Group at CGIAR.[1] Prior joining IFPRI and CGIAR, Swinnen was a Professor of Development Economics and the Director of LICOS Center for Institutions and Economic Performance at the KU Leuven in Belgium. [2] Between 2009 and 2018, he was the President of the International Association of Agricultural Economists (IAAE). [3] Swinnen received his PhD from Cornell University in 1992.[4]

Swinnen's research has focused on agricultural food policy, institutional reform and development, and globalization. He has published more than 30 books and more than 200 peer reviewed journal articles.[5] IDEAS/RePEc website ranks Swinnen as the 5th highest ranked agricultural economists in the world.[6]
