Joel Humberto Sánchez Maldonado is a Salvadoran businessman and politician. Sánchez is currently the presidential candidate for ARENA for the 2024 Salvadoran general election.[1]

Early life

Sánchez immigrated to the United States at the age of 19.[1]

Political career

2024 presidential election

On 15 June 2023, the Citizen Resistance civil movement proposed Sánchez as a potential presidential candidate.[2]

On 9 July 2023, ARENA officially announced that Sánchez would be the party's presidential candidate.[3]

Political positions

Sánchez generally supports the current Salvadoran gang crackdown in El Salvador, saying that “what is well done must be kept” but believes more reforms are needed in order to guarantee human rights.[4]

On 25 July 2023, Sánchez stated that he would renounce his presidential candidacy if it was "the decision of our country and our population" in order for find a more "suitable" candidate.[5]

Personal life

Sánchez founded his own cleaning company, Premier Cleaning Services, which is based in the Dallas-Forth Worth area and operates in the United States, Mexico, and El Salvador.[6]

He is proficient in English.[7]

He has one son, born and living in Dallas, Texas.[8]

Sánchez’s wife is of Mexican descent, and if Sánchez is elected president, she will be “the first First Lady of El Salvador of Mexican descent.”[9]
