Jewelmer Joaillerie (commonly known as Jewelmer) is a French-Filipino fine Jewellery with headquarters in Manila.[1]
It is a fully Vertical integration company involved in the production of South Sea pearls and fine jewelry. The company was founded in 1979 by Jacques Branellec and Manuel Cojuangco, and is currently the Philippines’ largest producer of South Sea pearls,[2] with a particular focus on the golden variant.[3]
History
The company was founded in 1979 by Jacques Branellec and Manuel Cojuangco, with the aim of producing Pearl without the dependence on gathering wild Oyster.[4] Before the development of a breeding process, which took the company at least 10 years to develop,[5] Jewelmer worked with the sea-faring Badjao: The Sea Gypsies in Southern Philippines to collect oysters.[6]
Presently, Jewelmer is known for its production of Philippine South Sea pearls and fine jewelry.[7]
Pearl cultivation
Jewelmer’s pearls are created by the Pinctada maxima oyster, the largest pearl-bearing oyster which produces pearls with thick nacre ranging from white to deep gold.[8]
The golden South Sea pearl is the focus of the company[9] as this color’s natural occurrence is scarce and rare.[10] The Philippines is one of the few countries that cultures South Sea pearls,[11][12] with Jewelmer as the country’s largest producer.[13] Approximately 3% of the company’s pearl harvest are used in their fine jewelry, while the rest are sold to other retailers.[14]
