Jessica Greenfield is a London-born singer/multi-instrumentalist and songwriter.[1] She was a student of Christ's Hospital from 1994 to 2001[1] and is best known as a member of Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds as well as a musician in her own right - as a member of English jazz hip-hop group The Herbaliser under a pseudonym of Jess Darling, recording vocals on their album Same as It Never Was (album); The Kondoors [2], and Wonder 45 [3]. Jessica married fellow musician Gavin Conder in May 2017 [4] and the couple welcomed a daughter Ava, born in November 2020. [5]

Early Life and influences

Jessica's guitarist father, Robert Greenfield, also known as Roberto Campoverde,[2] was a major influence as founder and band leader of Latin jazz rock outfit Cayenne who recorded live sessions for TV and radio and performed at major UK and European jazz clubs and festivals.[3] Cayenne had a club hit with their 1981 song Roberto Who..?[4] At Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club, the band played opposite Nina Simone, Gil Scott-Heron, and many more.[5] Robert's own compositions have featured in films and on documentary soundtracks.[6]

Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds

Jessica has been a member of Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds in recent years, from her debut performance at a recording of the BBC's Later... With Jools Holland on 31 October 2017[6] to the present day, providing backing vocals, keyboard and tambourine on the Stranded On The Earth world tour which commenced in February 2018 in support of the Who Built The Moon LP, eventually totalling 123 shows. She was invited into the band through a mutual acquaintance of herself and Noel's, producer and musician Paul Stacey.[7]

In support of Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds' subsequent Council Skies LP, on which she contributed backing vocals to 10 tracks,[8]Jessica joined the band for further touring, starting with Stateside dates which saw the band co-headlining with Garbage from June 2023.[9]

Jessica's other High Flying Birds studio credits include the band's This Is The Place EP.[10]

In 2019, she told Rolling Stone magazine that “Noel and the guys are amazing. Getting to travel the world and play in front of thousands of people is a real dream come true.”[11]

Own compositions

Jessica is also one half of indie soul duo The Kondoors alongside husband Gavin Conder.[12] While they first met in 2003 through mutual friends,[13] the couple later became a performing duo.

Jessica and Gavin funded both their first EP and the recording of their debut album at Monnow Valley studios in Monmouthshire, Wales.[14]

Their debut single released in 2018 was called Postcards [15]and their debut four-track EP Fallen Angel followed in 2019,[7] launched on 25 September at St Pancras Old Church, London.[16] According to Jessica: “We wrote it about how love can set you free from feeling lost. It’s a song about hope really.”[17]

After signing to UK label Fabyl Records, The Kondoors' debut album Glorious was given a five-star review and named Album of the Month by Music Republic Magazine in October 2021.[18]

The album, produced by long-term Noel Gallagher collaborator Paul Stacey and recorded live with a nine-piece band in three days,[19]was preceded by lead-off single Good Times which Rolling Stone India said "blends together the best of rock, funk and soul."[20]

Alongside her husband, Jessica is also part of retro soul collective Wonder 45, a six-piece soul and rhythm & blues band.[21] Their debut single Wonderland was released in May 2022.[22] Blues & Soul Magazine called it, "A slow building, supreme slice of vintage soul washed in reverb and adorned with heavy, fat and imperious horns."[23]

Jessica has various other songwriting credits including TV productions Love Island and The X Factor.[24]
