Jesse Noah Gruman (born August 29, 2005) is a Canadian actor best known for his roles in The Kid Detective, which marked his second theatrical appearance, after he appeared in the dramatic mystery, The Song of Names as Zygmunt Rapoport. Jesse also gained recognition when he played the crucial role of Harold Jenkins in the Netflix original The Umbrella Academy.[1] He was also nominated for the Outstanding Lead Performance category, at the 2018 META awards,[2] for his lead role in the world premiere of The Hockey Sweater: A Musical,[3] and won Best Leading Actor at the BroadwayWorld awards, for the same production.

Early Life

Jesse was born on August 29, 2005 in Montréal, Canada to Jewish parents. His mother is from Middle-Eastern and Moroccan descent, and his father from Lithuanian and Polish descent. Jesse lived in Florida for three years, from the age of two to five, but was born and currently resides in Montréal, Quebec, Canada.

Career

The first role Jesse ever auditioned for became his first acting job, which was the lead part in the world premiere of The Hockey Sweater: A Musical at the Segal Centre for Performing Arts.[4][5] Jesse ended up landing the main role of Roch, working closely alongside Donna Feore, Roch Carrier and Emil Sher. The musical was so praised by theatre fans that the Segal Centre for Performing Arts had to extend the showing dates.[6] The production was an official event of Montréal marking 375 years. Later that year, Jesse was nominated at the 2018 META awards[7] for outstanding lead actor for his emotional performance in the musical, and won best leading actor at the BroadwayWorld awards.

In 2018, Jesse went on to film the Netflix original, The Umbrella Academy,[8] in which he played the crucial role of Young Harold, stated in The Umbrella Academy's Wikipedia page and on the character list.[9] This is where he first gained some recognition by the fans of the show, enjoying his rather emotional, dark and gruesome character.

Later that year, Jesse went on to film The Song of Names, acting alongside Clive Owen and Tim Roth. Jesse played the son of Dovidl Rapoport, played by Clive Owen, Zygmunt Rapoport. This film marked Gruman's first theatrical appearance.

In 2019, after multiple audition rounds, Jesse landed another one of his larger and more important roles. Jesse marked his second movie theatre appearance, playing his character in the movie The Kid Detective, filming alongside Adam Brody, Sophie Nélisse, Wendy Crewson, Maurice Dean Wint and Peter MacNeill. Jesse plays the supporting lead role formally known as Young Abe, but is theoretically the kid detective himself. Brody plays the lead role: the older version of their shared character, Abe Applebaum. The Kid Detective's theatrical release is on October 16, 2020.

Jesse has also worked on Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Breakpoint, Far Cry New Dawn, and has also directed his own short horror film, The Stringless Violin.[10]
