Jelizaveta Suska (born in Bauska, Latvia, 15th May 1989) is a Latvian, Swedish jewellery artist based in Sweden.

Early life and education

Jelizaveta was born and raised in Jelgava, Latvia.[1] Jelizaveta studied Metal Design at and graduated from the Art Academy of Latvia in 2013.[1][2] As an exchange student at the HAWK University in Hildesheim, Germany she discovered and became interested in jewellery art.[1][3]

Jelizaveta moved from Riga to Gothenburg, Sweden in 2013 to study jewellery art at the University of Gothenburg School of Design and Crafts (HDK) masters program.[4][5] At the HDK she started experimenting with the materials, primarily crushed marble and a polymer clay, that she would later become known for.[6][1]

During this time Jelizaveta attended the Hiko Mizuno College of Jewelry in Tokyo, Japan as an exchange student for a semester.[7][3] She graduated from the University of Gothenburg in 2015.[7]

Career and work

In 2016, at the age of 26, she won the top award at Schmuck, the contemporary jewellery world's most important event, the Herbert Hofmann Prize with her work Frozen Moment.[6]

That same year she was awarded the Amber Prize at the Amberif Design Award 2016.[8] In 2018 she was one of the finalists of the Art Jewellery Forum and of the Mari Funaki Awards, as an emerging artist. [9]

Jelizaveta was selected as one of the recipients of the 2022 Culture Scholarship from the Sten A Olsson Foundation for Research and Culture.[10][11] Which also included an exhibition at the Gothenburg Musuem of Art. [12][13]

She visualized this key aspect of her work as viewed from the tiny perspective of Thumbelina in 2020, when she held a Virtual Reality exhibition of her jewellery called "Microméga" at Sveriges Konstföreningar och Konsthantverkscentrums Vandringsutställning.[14][15] The exhibition enabled visitors to virtually walk on her jewellery, re-scaled as if it they were as small as Thumbelina, and her artwork as large as a mountain.[15]

She created this virtual reality art experience in 2017 during a six month residency at IASPIS in Stockholm, Sweden where she decided to attempt to fully realize the Thumbelina perspective of her jewellery.[2]

Her work can be found, amongst others, at the Stockholm National Museum of Art and Design, RIAN Design museum in Falkenberg and several private collections.[7][16]
