Jealousy, Jealousy (stylised in all lowercase) is a song written and recorded by American singer-songwriter Olivia Rodrigo. It is the ninth track on her debut studio album, Sour, which was released on May 21, 2021, via Geffen Records. Dan Nigro produced the song.
Background
Olivia Rodrigo began meeting with record labels in early 2020, and subsequently signed with Geffen Records and Interscope Records, intending to release her debut extended play in 2021.[1] American songwriter and producer Dan Nigro encountered a video of her performing her then-unreleased song "Happier" and was impressed by her vocals, stating, "her voice is insane". He contacted Rodrigo suggesting they make music together.[2] Their plans were initially delayed due to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, but the two began working on music at Nigro's home studio a few months later. Rodrigo and Nigro co-wrote the song "Drivers License" in July 2020,[2][3] which she released as her debut single in January 2021, to unprecedented commercial success. Billboard declared it one of the "most dominant" hits in Hot 100 history.[4]
Rodrigo announced her debut studio album Sour on April 1, 2021.[5] "Jealousy, Jealousy" placed ninth on the track listing.[6]
Composition
"Jealousy, Jealousy", has been described as "jazzy",[7] "serpentine" and an "alt-rock squall à la the Kills" with a "plucky bassline and a prowling piano build".[8][9] Its lyrics talk about the toxicity of social media and its addictiveness, displaying the obsessions of living a perfect life.[10] The song has a tempo of 138 beats per minute and its chord progression is Am/C/C6/G/D/C.[11]
Critical reception
Rob Sheffield of The Rolling Stone, describes the song as "Olivia [singing] about the kind of compare-and-despair self loathing that too much phone addiction brings on".[12] The song had been covered by actress Brie Larson as a tribute to Rodrigo, after "thanking her for her "words"".[13]
