Jasmin Kaur is a Canadian writer, poet, spoken word performer, and illustrator. Her writing embraces themes of feminism, reclaiming identity, social empowerment, love, healing, and survival. She also leads creative writing workshops for young people across North America, the UK, and Australia.[1][2]
Education
Kaur attended the University of the Fraser Valley in British Columbia, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in English with a focus on Creative Writing. She became a public school teacher.
Career
Kaur has written two books, If I Tell You the Truth and When You Ask Me Where I'm Going, with themes that includes the topics of immigration, societal view of rape victims in South Asia, and the Punjabi diaspora[3].[4]
Kaur cites Fatimah Asghar, Safia Elhillo, and Trista Mateer as influences.[3]. Kaur describes her writing as a continuation of the revolutionary Sikh tradition of standing up for the oppressed[3]
Recognition and achievements
In 2020, she was called a "rising star" by Vogue Magazine,[5] and a "Writer to Watch" by CBC Books.[6] She was featured by Elle Magazine,[3] Teen Vogue,[7] and BuzzFeed,[8] among other publications.
