Jan Rasmussen Sande (July 18, 1760 – January 11, 1847) was a Norwegian sailor, farmer, and politician from Nøtterøy in Vestfold.[1]

Life

He was born to Rasmus Kristenssön and Mari Kristensen in Sande, Nøtterøy, Vestfold, Norway on July 18, 1760.[2] Sande's father was a tenant farmer on the Sande farm in Nøtterøy, and Sande himself took a mate's exam in Tønsberg and sailed around 1780 as a skipper on the "Frederikke Sofie" of Nøtterøy.[3] The ship was captured and burned by the French, and Sande was subsequently held captive in France for three years.[4] He sailed as a sailor for many years and took over his father's Sande farm in the 1790s, but continued to work as a skipper for many years.[5]

Sande was the first representative for Jarlsberg county in the Norwegian Parliament in 1821 and at the subsequent parliamentary session in 1822.[5][1] In 1821, he was a member of four committees, including the Constitution Committee, the Flag Committee, and the Navigation Examination Committee in Fredriksvern.[5][1] He was one of those who submitted a drawing for a Norwegian flag in 1821.[citation needed] Sande was known to be able to speak ten different languages, including Greek and Latin.

His design was based on Christian Frederick's alternative flag proposal from 1814, but with a white cross instead of a grey cross[6].

He proposed a design for a Norwegian flag in 1821, which was one of several proposals submitted that year.[6]

He died on January 11, 1847, at the age of 86.
