Jan Gezinyus Dunning (born 5 December 1959) is a Dutch entrepreneur. President and CEO at Magnit PJSC.

Biography

Jan Dunning was born in Groningen. He graduated from The University of Groningen in 1983 with a bachelor’s degree in Modern History. In 1989, he took his MBA at The University of Amsterdam. Later he attended Executive Development Programmes at London Business School (2007) and INSEAD (2008).[1]

In 1989, he started his career in retail trade. Dunning got his first job in the German company Aldi Retail in the Netherlands where he became a Regional Manager. From 1994 until 2000, he worked as Sales and Development Director for Aldi Retail. His next job was the position of General Director at Lucas Klamer trading company, a subsidiary of Metro Group.

In 2003, Dunning became Sales Director in the Russian division of Metro Cash & Carry, where he also later worked as Chief Operating Officer. At that time, the company positioned itself on the market as a small scale wholesale center for holders of special cards.[2] In 2004, the chain ranked second in Russia in terms of turnover.[3] During the 6 years of his work in Metro, the business expanded from 4 to 48 stores.[4] For a certain time, Dunning was the head of Ukrainian division of Metro Cash & Carry.

In 2009, he became CEO of Lenta retail chain.[5] His coming to work in Lenta was connected with the end of a nearly two year corporate conflict between the two company’s shareholders — August Meyer and Oleg Zherebtsov, who were both insisting on the right to appoint their own CEOs.[6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13]

In 2013, he entered the Board of Directors of Lenta. In February 2014, Dunning’s term in the office as Lenta CEO was extended for another five years.[14] In 2014, under Dunning’s leadership, Lenta carried out the IPO and in spite of the Ukrainian crisis managed to attract as much as USD 950 million, reaching 4.3 billion USD in capitalization.[15][16] During its SPO in March of 2015, Lenta attracted another USD 225.28 million.[17] In November 2017, the company managed by Dunning became a member of European alliance of retailers called European Marketing Distribution.[18] In the end of 2018, it became known that Dunning was leaving Lenta.[19] Over the ten years of Jan Dunning’s work in Lenta, the company has become one of the fastest growing retailers in Russia.[20]

In January 2019, Dunning became President of Magnit and also Member of its Board of Directors.[21][22] When the news on his appointment spread, Magnit shares on Moscow Exchange went up by 4%.[23] Early in July of 2019, Dunning was re-elected as company’s President for another three years and appointed Chair of the Board of Directors’ Strategy Committee.[24] He also increased his equity stake in Magnit authorized capital to 0.103775%.[25] As a result of Olga Naumova’s resignation as Magnit CEO, Dunning temporarily took on her former role in July 2019.[26]
