James Weiss is a scientist and a science communicator known for popularizing microscopy and microbes. He is the author of the book "The Hidden Beauty of the Microscopic World".[1] where he describes microbes with his easy-to-understand style, and tells his personal story that got him into the microscopy. He partners with Hank Green on Journey to the Microcosmos[2] on YouTube and maintains his own Instagram[3] account where he posts daily.
History
The journey for Weiss as an independent scientist consisted of operating in his private laboratory collecting pond samples, and capturing Protist|protists clips for both his YouTube [4] and Instagram[3] accounts regularly. The partnership with Hank Green and Journey to the Microcosmos[2] began on April 10, 2019. Their initial collaboration video was of tardigrades developing; and within three weeks the channel reached a staggering 100,000 subscribers which has steadily increased since 2019. Weiss worked with Journey to the Microcosmos[2] to create James' first microscope to produce a cheap and accessible microscopy for anyone. After a successful Kickstarter campaign Weiss and his collaborators launched the microcosmos store[5].
According to his book, Weiss spends between 8 to 12 hours everyday looking through a microscope searching for microbes. He recently published his first scientific article as first author on a rare microbe, Legendrea loyezae, which has only been reported four times prior to his recent discovery in 114 years[6]. Weiss and his co-author Genoveva Esteban[7] of Bournemouth University have a unique approach to science where inspiration and pure passion coincide by analyzing each subject under a microscope "they want to bring back the excitement of ecological and behavioral discoveries of the early microbe studies which can only be seen through the microscope"[8]
