James Nathan Whitaker is an American religious scholar and journalist currently studying at the University of Notre Dame.[1] Whitaker is best known for his research on Saint Nilus of Ancyra and tenure as humor editor of the Irish Rover newspaper.[1]
Early life
Whitaker was born in New York but later migrated to the Washington, D.C. area, where he attended a Christian school from kindergarten through 12th grade.[2] As detailed in his autobiographical article in the Irish Rover, Whitaker converted to Catholicism in high school after participating in a book club with his friends studying the works of Saint Thomas Aquinas and Saint Augustine.[2]
Whitaker attended the University of Virginia and graduated with Distinction from the College of Arts and Sciences in 2021.[3] He then procured his Master's in Theological Studies (MTS) from the University of Notre Dame with minors in Medieval Studies and Byzantine Studies in 2023.[4] Whitaker then enrolled in the University of Notre Dame's Doctoral Program in Theology.[1]
Scholarship
During his studies, Whitaker has presented at several conferences on the writings and teachings of Saint Nilus of Ancyra, a Catholic theologian born in the 4th century.[5] Examples include the University of Notre Dame's Inaugural Graduate Conference on Early Christian Studies in May 2022[6] and the International Conference on Patristics Studies hosted by Oxford University in August 2024.[7] Whitaker's presentations include topics such as "Rediscovering the Authentic Corpus of Saint Nilus of Ancyra"[8] and "The State of Scholarship on St. Nilus of Ancyra."[6] As of 2023, Whitaker was working on two translations for St. Vladimir's Seminary Press:[9] The Ascetic Treatises of Saint Nilus of Ancyra and the Small Catecheses of Saint Theodore the Studite.[10] Both projects received funding from the University of Notre Dame De Nicola Center for Ethics and Culture,[10] a research institute focused on the Catholic intellectual tradition.[11]
Journalism
Since he began at Notre Dame, Whitaker has been a frequent contributor to the Irish Rover newspaper, a student-run publication promoting conservative ideas.[12] Most articles written by Whitaker are in the paper's humor section, including "Meditations on Babies,"[13] "Reflections of a Humor Editor,"[14] and "Suspect Research Discovers New Minorities."[15] Many of the articles are parodies of Catholic traditions, including an article on scapulars,[16] a popular Christian cloth garment.[17] One article, first published entirely in Latin,[18] satirically models the writings of Saint Thomas Aquinas[19] in answering the question "Whether Christ Was Liberal?"[20]
Along with his contributions to the humor section, Whitaker has authored or co-authored several pieces on campus life at Notre Dame. Subjects include events on campus[21][22] and theatrical productions.[23][24] One article, titled "Rover Interviews Artist Behind Controversial Mural,"[25] details the work of Puerto Rican artist Juan Sanchez on Notre Dame's campus.[26]
