James E. Demmert is an American investment manager, author, and philanthropist. He is the founder and Chief Investment Officer of Main Street Research, a registered investment advisory firm.[1] Demmert has been recognized in Barron’s and Forbes industry rankings and has published several books on investment strategy.[2][3]

Early life and education

He was born in Rochester, New York. He attended Berkshire School, where he later became a trustee.[4] He studied at Hobart and William Smith Colleges and graduated from Harvard University.

Career

Demmert began his career in finance in 1985 with Lehman Brothers and LF Rothschild. He later became a partner at The Belvedere Group before founding Main Street Research in 1993.[5] Before living in New York City and Connecticut, he lived for 25 years in Marin County, California, where he founded Main Street Research. The firm is registered with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and provides wealth management services to families and institutions. As of December 1, 2025, Main Street Research reported $2.694 billion in assets under management (AUM). The firm manages money for individuals, families, and nonprofits.[6][7]

His investment commentary has appeared in CNBC,[8][9] Bloomberg,[10][11] Reuters,[12] Fox Business,[13] BBC World News,[14] CNN,[15] Kiplinger,[16] Business Insider,[17] MarketWatch,[18] and The Wall Street Journal. He has been listed as Barron’s Top 1200 Financial Advisors[19] and Barron’s Financial Advisor Top 100.[20] He was recognized in Barron’s and Forbes rankings in 2023, 2024, and 2025.[21]

  • The Sustainable Endowment (2019), focused on nonprofit endowment management.[25][26][27]
  • Wall Street Lessons (2023), addressing behavioral biases in investing[28][29]

His works have received recognition from award programs including the National Indie Excellence Awards, Beverly Hills Book Awards[30], Living Now Book Awards,[27] and the New York Book Festival.

Philanthropy

In 2018, Demmert was named Citizen of the Year by the Town of Tiburon, California. He serves as a trustee of Berkshire School[4] and is affiliated with organizations such as the Economic Club of New York, Metropolitan Opera Foundation, the Guggenheim Foundation, and the Harvard Club. He is active in the philanthropic community in New York, supporting and hosting events for nonprofits.[31]

Demmert is the co-founder and chairman of the Academy of Finance®, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit school with the mission to educate and shape the next generation of investors
