Presidential Election in Belarus (2020)

During 2020 Belarusian presidential election, Ivan Kravtsov joined campaign team of belarusian banker and one of the presidential candidates Viktar Babaryka as public relations manager in May 2020.[11]. On July 28, 2020, together with Maria Kalesnikava and other members of the team, he petitioned the KGB of Belarus for a change of preventive measure for Viktar Babaryka.[3] In August 2020, the Coordination Council (Belarus) of the Belarusian Opposition was established to hold talks with the authorities on a peaceful transfer of power.[12] On September 1, 2020, Kravtsov was invited to the Investigative Committee of the Republic of Belarus for questioning on the criminal case for the establishment of the Coordination Council under Article 361 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Belarus[1]

Maria Kalesnikava's Abduction and Criminal Charges

On September 7, 2020, the media reported that a member of Viktar Babaryka's team and one of the key opposition figures Maria Kalesnikava has disappeared along with Ivan Kravtsov, and the press-secretary of the Coordination Council, Anton Radniankou. [13][14] Kravtsov was brought to the Financial Investigation Department, where officers allegedly threatened a criminal case against him unless he agreed to drive Kalesnikova out of the country in order to “de-escalate” the political situation in Belarus. [15] [16][17][18] Kravtsov's apartment was searched.[19] Though KGB officials threatened Maria Kalesnikava with imprisonment and murder if she refused to leave the country, [20] Maria refused to cross the border and deliberately ripped up her passport.[21][22][23] Kravtsov and Radniankou managed to enter Ukraine, and Belarusian President Lukashenko announced the authorities' request for Ukrainian border guards to return both back to Belarus.[24]

On September 11, the State Control Committee of the Republic of Belarus instituted criminal proceedings against Kravtsov under Part 4 Article 210 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Belarus for theft through abuse of power. [25]

On September 17 Ivan Kravtsov applied to the Investigative Committee of the Republic of Belarus for instituting criminal proceedings over his abduction and illegal imprisonment. [26]

In August 2020, Viktar Babaryka and Maria Kalesnikava announced the creation of the "Razam" party in a video message. It was also announced that in the near future the team would submit documents for registration of the party.[27][28]However, Maria Kolesnikova and other members of the headquarters were soon detained. The creation of the party resumed at the end of March 2021, Ivan Kravtsov joined the organizing committee along with other opposition activists.[29][30]
